I think it's silly to have so many of these "Applications" or "Servers" or whatever you call them, but my question is, what do they actually do other than download the game for you?
Why do they need to run to play the game through them?
What do they do other than hog valuable resources?
Why can't their be just one?
Also, I have heard that they usually just end up actually making the game(s) run worse, why is that?

Makes no sense to me.
We have Steam, which is accepted by 99% of the world's population to be THE app for games.
When I start Far Cry 4 through Uplay it tells me that Steam needs to be open to launch... so why do I need Uplay? Just to eat a little extra memory?
There's a positive thing though, I can still buy and install my games via Steam, and the overlay still works. I want my games in one place. Can't say that about EA and Origin.
