What kind of a cipher has been in the things? Caesar or just individual letter substitution (whatever that's called)?

Anyway here's where we are in the puzzle:

should become something:

They are cryptograms. Individual letter substitution.

The Moody Blues responses were never meant to be thought of as attempts to solve the puzzle; they were a running joke specifically aimed at Moodyblues57, and had nothing to do with any effort Dan put into his puzzles. Personally, I found Dan's response offensive, though not surprising, considering his normal hubris and condescension.

I often go to forum threads dedicated to a specific puzzle, disparage people who are interested in the puzzle as well as the original creator of the thread who put a lot of effort into the puzzle, and vow to never be involved in the thread again. That's just how I roll.

Not flipping the one doesn't seem to help.

In case the flipping means something else...

I think you and abbottcr are right. ESPBCVL QYBM is QUARTIC ZERO. and the reversed letters probably signify a negative number, so your equation:

3x^4+91x^3+49x^2-36x+7=0

Is correct.
