How does saving work in this game?

Just gotten past the prologue and now see theres a save button in the menu next to the save and quit button. Is this meant to allow you to save at any time or does the game only auto-save? For example I've done stuff like killed and collected 3 pelts, crafted the upgrade walked back to a shop and sold items then saved, save and quitted and then return to see the upgrade wasn't crafted. Is this intended or is there something faulty on my end?

There is only one save game that I'm aware of (I just manually back up my last save from yesterday----so I was in my Uplay/game file system; still only one save the way it's been from game release). STRONGLY recommend you manually back up your game save at least once daily! If anything goes wrong with the save you have............................you'll be starting a new game with out back up saves to revert to. Good luck!

Thanks for the response, I was referring to saving in the game though, It'd be nice to be able to say kill an animal craft something then sell my loot and be able to quit knowing when i came back on all that stuff would still be there.

My experience with Far Cry 4 saves is as follows: There is no manual saving! There is a SAVE button in the menu that you'll notice disappears during missions, but doesn't work at any other time anyway.

The game makes a permanent save automatically evidenced by the two crossed yellow swords in the upper right corner of the screen at the following times:

    1. After using a weapons cabinet or sleeping in a bed in a safe house.
    2. After trading a with a Sherpa.
    3. After certain campaign missions.

Not all of these saves work either. The Sherpa save is hit or miss. The safe house is the only one I have found to be sure of. Always return to one and save at any time you want to quit playing.

The game makes "checkpoint" saves that are NOT permanent and will disappear when you shut down the game, evidence by the word "checkpoint" in the upper right corner of the screen at the following times:

    1. Just before starting some missions.
    2. In the middle of long multipart missions.
    3. Before some cut scenes.

I suspect the SAVE button in the menu that doesn't work is a holdover from a time in the games development when a real manual multi save game function was going to be added. Then Ubi changed their mind and left the button behind.

I'm halfway through my third play through and have not found safe house saves to be reliable at all. In fact I used to think starting a mission then quitting game before embarking on it was, but have since found that it has to be a story mission to be sure. Side missions you can't count on. They're more like session, or "checkpoint" saves.

So basically any Golden Path crossed sword, or A, S, L, Y, W missions if started will bring you back to the start of that mission. Keep in mind too you can still abort the mission if you just want to use it as a save. The problem with that though is it will revert you to the last auto save (crossed swords) before starting the mission, and some of those are more reliable than others, so you don't necessarily know which one you'll abort to.

Bottom line, this save system has no defined "system" to it. It's woefully inadequate, everyone knows it, and Ubi have yet to acknowledge it still needs fixing.

With 2+ play throughs under your belt, you have obviously encountered more save game weirdness than I have. I just started my second, and I have to say, I have not encountered a safe house save that did not stick unless it had been replaced by another crossed swords save from a story mission. Since there is only one save game slot, this makes sense. But even after a mission based crossed swords save, I always go save again in safe house before shutting down. I just do not trust the game to do it right on it's own anymore.

I have had a couple of instances where coming out of a trading post/weapons cabinet I did not see the crossed swords appear. Having already learned the hard way not to trust the save game system, when that happens I immediately go sleep in the bed across the room, after which, the cross swords have always appeared.

The save game function is, at best, seriously odd, and at worst, inconsistent and broken. There is no mention of it in the game's manual. After sitting through the entire credits after my first play through, I can see why. Even discounting all the additional people needed for translations and voice acting in the dozen plus languages they made the game for, the staff involved in making this game was humongous! Given the relatively short development time for a game this big, the last minute changes in system requirements, the Save button in the menu that doesn't work, and the huge crew, there probably wasn't one person who completely understood how the save game system functioned, so they just left it out of the manual :-)

I can't believe I mistakenly said woefully adequate in my above post. Typo corrected.
