At first glance this game is epic. The artwork, the landscape, the attention to detail... it's just mind blowing. After watching some videos I was so excited to start playing. After an hour I wasn't so sure. After a day I was pissed. After a week I was just sad and disappointed.
The first hurdle of course are all the technical problems that require extensive googling and a willingness to do some PC housecleaning and editing of both the GamerProfile.xml and the launch properties within Steam... cos UPlay stopped supporting them. You know, so the game will actually do things like START and SAVE. Then there's the video setup and the non-stop stuttering, despite the fact that I have a brand new Haswell i5 running at 4.5ghz and a pair of 2gb Radeon 7870's. Whoops, forgot, FC4 is not Crossfire compatible. So make that 1 2gb Radeon 7870. So, I've made some accommodations in order to play the game, cos it's gonna be absolutely EPIC, right?
Yeah, not so much. I mean, as stated above, the artwork is just unreal. These guys deserve some serious props cos this game LOOKS incredible. The landscape is so rich and so beautiful that it puts Skyrim to shame by comparison. It's just gorgeous. Unfortunately, it's kinda downhill from there. The first thing you notice is that the world is populated by MORONS. Seriously, I find myself wondering if the guys working on the Far Cry games do it on purpose. I mean, just watch the drivers. These idiots routinely, constantly run their FRIENDS over! Then, of course, the civilians are constantly throwing themselves under my wheels or elephant. I mean I actually tried to avoid them. I couldn't do it. They kept running in front of me! Then of course there's the wildlife. Most of it makes sense. The elephants are just the bomb. They're wonderful. But... all the wildlife is over the top aggressive. It's absurd. You can't go anywhere without seeing civilians getting mauled by dogs or leopards... or eagles?! Since when do eagles attack people? Add to that the constant "karma events" where the good guys and bad guys are shooting at each other... all the damn time... and instead of this wide open, epic adventure... you have something tiresome. Seriously, it's a drag to play this game. After an hour or so I don't want to play anymore. I want to go read a book or something.
For a while I got mad. I was upset about the ridiculous on-screen situational prompts that told me the developers think I'm incapable of remembering which keys my controls are bound to. Apparently they think I need an ON SCREEN reminder to press E to get in or out of a vehicle... which is really handy when I'm flying a buzzer... several hundred feet off the deck. This same logic shows up whenever I'm flying a hang glider or have a fire or explosive arrow equipped. One of my personal favorites is the on-screen tutorial telling you how to use your sniping scope. Yes, despite the fact that every PC game since Unreal has used the exact same default control schematic for a sniper rifle Ubisoft thought we needed an ON SCREEN tutorial that cannot be disabled.
Even better, the bin file that has all the necessary values to tweak to actually render this game playable is both COMPRESSED and ENCRYPTED; meaning Ubisoft is actively opposed to the game being modded. In other words we have to live with it.
I can't believe I actually paid $90 for this game. On the bright side I do know one thing for certain: I will never purchase another Ubisoft game without having played it FIRST. Good Job, Ubisoft!
I can sympathize on the tech problems. I hate the digital DL age myself and avoid it whenever possible. That said, I have found more often than not it's Uplay and Ubi more than Steam causing the problems.
On the multi GPU thing, I built my current sys with a PSU in mind for it using a temp solution GTS 250 while waiting for the 580 to drop, but I never went for dual GPU. There's just too many games that have issues with it or don't support it, and that happens with both SLI and XFire. Plus I don't like that you get only half of your total VRAM because it primarily uses alternating frame technology. 2GB here, 2GB there, is still just 2GB, not 4. And that matters a lot now that games have HUGE texture files.
Yeah the world is beautiful but enveloped in constant chaos. As much as we like to cuss at it, most small countries involved in civil war are quite maddening. And as much as we like to cry foul at the constant wildlife rampage, brutal civil war in such a place would actually cause a lot of disturbance with the wildlife, which would in turn make them do things they normally wouldn't. Yeah it's a bit of an excuse and reason to try and stay immersed and suspend disbelief, but not completely far fetched.
I avoid a lot of it by fast traveling combined with running through the jungle and listening for combat and/or wildlife, and then divert my path far enough from it to not be detected or caught. I still get attacked unexpectedly now and then, but for the most part I can control how much I'm exposed to it. Buzzers, the Wingsuit and Autodrive are other ways to deal with it. I've even found with Autodrive that friendly NPCs are FAR less likely to run into you on the road. I recall this came up a lot in Far Cry 2 because checkpoints respawned so quickly. I just used fast travel, river boats, and moving crouched through the tall grass to avoid it. Of course there were no predators there though.
Have to agree as well on screen cluttering prompts. Why they don't factor into the list of HUD items you can disable is baffling. I can only say that they are common in most games, esp since QTE became so popular. I guess we can blame RE4's creator Shinji Mikami for that. We can only hope they'll further improve upon what HUD items can be turned off with the next installment. From much of what you said though, I have to wonder if you played Far Cry 3, because a lot of what you mentioned played out the same way in that game.

I loved FC 3 I felt like I had the option of wandering about without any real stress except the occaisional pirate attack by multiple truckloads of pirates. But once I figured out the loadout, skills, crafted syringes, and skills necessary, it wasn't too stressful. However I could from low stress sniper to high stress Rambo any time I chose, and the great thing is....It was my choice all the time. The animals in FC4 never bother me. Sometimes the game kills me for sure while I'm camera scoping out a base below and I dont hear any growl or tiger footsteps and I was careful to look the whole area over prior to make sure no animals were present, and the GAME JUST DECIDES TO SPAWN A TIGER< BEAR, LEOPARD OR WOLF PACK 2 feet away and I get jumped while camera in hand and have no chance but to die. BUt....that seldom happens. And once you get a Buzzsaw the most OP weapon in any game ever, that i've found, even then a silent attack is not impossible to win against any multitude of animals. So.... The game's AI decided that people liked the higher stress style of being attacked constantly and that is was boring to only get attacked occaisionally so they made it that way. I played alot of Planetside 2 and that was the most stressful game I ever played, constant battles with other men and women (multiplayer) with the added feature of some of them taking out rocket equipped planes or tanks or mechanical suits (MAXs) with all manner of serious weapons on board
, holy cow what a blood fest that game is. And if you think you stand a chance in Planetside, forget it, a open world game with up to 2000 players on board at the same time means the fights are NEVER FAIR and even matched.
So on walkabout in FC 4 I can choose to adventure or attack forts, and can enjoy searching for an evil radiating mask or spin a mani wheel, and fly a gyrocopter. My system doesn't struggle too much (it still stutters and gets a grey or black screen once in awhile) and I have an old Phenom 2 1045 OCd to 3.4 GHZ and a 7850 2GB GPU. I get like 40 plus FPS most of the time on med @ 1920X1080 and it looks great, the shadowing is stunning. i have figured out how to use a system to save unlimited numbers of game positions and will admit they could have done a lot better by having all the instructional cut scenes in the tactics section so your not bothered by them unless you need to fiind out information on how to do something. They could have made the save system similiar to FC 3 with 3 saved games and 2 save points available (autosave [last checkpoint] and a manual save (say at a mid point thru the game at your choice, that you'd like to be able LATER...to start again from) but they failed horribly. Next they have a slew up beta testers (read Game owners) who tell them exactly what they dont like, and yet they fail to address the issues in patches presumably because they dont want to spend any money post game on making it be more enjoyable. Of course you cant please everyone, but..... they never answer any quiestions. There like the government, they offer a product and then refuse to discuss it after you are an owner of their product and have to deal with using their product.. There may be legitamate reasons why things cant be fixed but why is it that the people with the best solutions are always the super savy computer geeks and not the Devs? Thank you, to all the code warriors who figure out how to improve the gameplay. And finally thankyou to all the DEVs who makde such a complex huge open world to explore full of caves and temples and the explosive action as an added bonus.
This game is definitely more of an exploration open world game than an FPS, from the little I have seen my friend play, there are just way too many damn quest at the same time for my liking and it seems they want to hurry you up or you are considered a looser. If you are in the middle of delivering a combat truck (or whatever the name is) you may be asked to stop 3 or more times to help for Karma, or repair a truck or help the natives with Eagles (BTW, how big are the Eagles in the Himalayas that they attack people every 0.5 seconds?) .
My friend started the game in Normal so I figured its the mode where you mostly learn the "How To Do's" but God all Mighty, the enemy AI is dumber than door nails, I have more chance of being attack and kill by a colony of ants than by one of those buffoons. What a terrible and lazy job the Devs did. At least in FC3 you had to do some thinking before committing to a fight with them. Here, all you need to worry is that an animal will not attack you while you are trying to cut your nails and deal with easy pray like the enemy AI.
I am hoping that when he goes back for a second pass in Hardcore things will change a bit but then again, this is UBI and what will probably happen is that animals will mauled you to death quicker and the enemy AI will have more numbers thrown at you but they will be as stupid as they are now.
My friend was trying to use the glider but the "S" to pitch down did not work so yeah, that was fun until he decided his best recourse was to die and just walk to wherever he was going LOL.
But no worries, UBI thanks you for your patronage and hopes you will continue to help them Beta Test the next FC5 because they don't have enough money to finish a product.![]()

I loved fc3 even though it had no companions to help you in combat and kill time, but after fallout/elders scrolls I was sure fc4 would follow the new bench mark, but no, they just made a larger fc3 with pointless quests, by this I mean fc3 your quests saved your friends, here you make money but good weapons are locked and there are no useable brothels, so really you don't need lots of money (they should have unlocked all weapons and skills then with money you choose your upgrades and transport like they did in rage) I think that is why I still enjoy replaying rage and tomb raider 2013, quests get you points, points gets you upgrades and main purpose is to save your friends.
fc4 < its a real shame because as you guys said the graphics are great (I had to upgrade from 640 to 970 card to make it playable) so I was also pissed with the pointless quests and finding it hard to replay without falling asleep. but all is not lost cheat engine guys are adding new mods weekly and when they make a few nudie mods, I can finally have some eye candy to help with the boredom. I really hope that fc5 will take the best from other games on the high selling list and combined all to make a game with not only great graphics but also eye candy, companions and meaning full quests that reward you with (points or money) so you can get upgrades ( not only weapon but skills and even transport) while on your path to save friends or the world. I am doubly pissed 1 with pointless quests and cant choice upgrades you want > fc4 and totally pissed with dragon age inquisition also great graphics but omg cant aim combat, computer aims for you and you just hold fire button and after about 100 arrows you can finally kill something, so if you want to be happy with fc4, go buy inquisition hehehe
ii should agree with this. This game is not a shooter, you need half a bullet to kill human enemies.Where is the your own SKILL ??-nowhere.They dumbed down AI ,gameplay is slow and clunky ,constantOriginally Posted by GiveMeTactical Go to original post
