Recommended reading for Assassin's Creed Victory's Victorian world

    This book is excellent:

"The Victorian City" by Judith Flanders

I've never read another book that combines such tight research about the era and also succeeds in being written in an entertaining way. She describes daily life in the era in a way that makes it very easy to visualise, and unlike many people she is not obsessed with the minority of the upper classes. This is a proper view of London, mostly about the majority of Londoners: the poor and the rising middle class.

There is a real mixture of the sober and the bizarre in this. I learned that London's horsedrawn buses, like all vehicles, were not bound by many laws at all. Vehicles would weave across the roads as they pleased, but buses were particularly strange. It was common for the drivers to steer with their arms hooked through two rings, which connected to lengths of strong cloth leading back up the vehicle. Passengers would tug to tell the driver if they wanted to stop on the right or left side of the street, and whichever won would get their way. Nuts. I don't know what happened if it was a draw.

She wrote more books about the era, but this one might be of particular interest:

"The Invention of Murder" by Judith Flanders
