    Shadows broken badly Northern Kyrat/was fine South Kyrat---temp fix found

    This shadow problem has effectively paused farcry 4 for me as its ruining the experience completely.

    Tree shadows in particular and building/mountain shadows have gone to absolute hell in the Northern Kyrat section of the game. (spoiler alert -------- problem started right after the kings bridge mission).

    Inside buildings i look down at a 45 deg angle and black soup crawls up the walls, mouse up to directly forward and its like theres no shading at all and the room is lit with stadium lighting. It happens outside too everything goes overbright and ruins all the brilliant lighting that i was so impressed with in Southern Kyrat.

    I have not changed any graphical settings (ALL ULTRA, motion blur off, HBAO+, TXAA4), game was already running fine at version 1.4 in southern kyrat, drivers are the nvidia 344.75.
    My pc specs are i7 4770k, EVGA 780ti ACX Superclocked, 16gb ram, win 8.1.

    When the problem persisted i tried juggling various graphical settings that could be related and saw no improvement.

    The game (and its shadows/lighting) have been superb up until literally setting foot in Northern Kyrat, before this my only frustration was wingsuiting into walls when i just wanted to jump (im sure im not the only one).

    On a side note it seems like most of the beta testing must of been on the southern kyrat section, the first two hang gliders i tried to use in the north were aiming straight at a rock or a tree and crashed on takeoff. good times.

    EDIT: temp workaround found

    Simply go for ultra shadows and disable PCSS wich is broken. Nvidia and Ubi are currently working on it.
    find your gamerprofile.xml which will be in the users/mydocuments/mygames/farcry4 folder

    change;

    ShadowQuality="ultrahigh"

    EnableNvidiaPCSS="0"

    and while your at it heres some other fixes gleaned from some clued in users in the forum, might aswell note them all in one spot...

    GPUMaxBufferedFrames="1" <----this seems to help alot with smoothing out the stuttering ingame (i also changed nvidia control panel option maxprerendered frames to "3")

    IronsightToggleMode="1" <----if you hate holding the aim button down like me

    I tried the lightingquality ultrahigh fix for the dark areas and it makes everything look pretty damn nice, but adds a bit of blur to the edges of the guns etc.

    Thanks a bunch for the temp workaround for the shadows OttO8, can confirm this has worked for me.

    Kudos to you sir!

    I have the same problem with shadows. It was fine until the latest patch, it happens in the south for me as well but just to a lesser extent and mostly indoors or in caves compared to the north where it's everywhere all of the time, it looks really bad in motion with the shadows and lights popping in and out and all around acting wierd. I took a few screens...

    Same problem here. All started after the kings bridge mission.

    It bothers me a lot, because sometimes the shadows go crazy when I'm running.

    And there is this inside shadow problens...arrg

    My screenshots were taken with everything set to HIGH, that includes shadows. Like I wrote earlier it was fine before the latest patch.

    That is strange.. Try to set enablenvidiapcss=0 from gamerprofile.ini, that is a second possibile solution I used =)
    Anyway, shadows on ultra are working correctly for me on northern Kyrat!

    Thanks for the advice, disabling PCSS through the gamerprofile worked! Now if only disabling mousesmoothing had worked too

    I've already tried shadows in Ultra, very high and high and I faced the problem with all of them.

    It's really strange, because it looks like you are getting close to the sun and there is a "square" that follows me and remove every shadow that it touch.

    I'm glad that you found a way to fix it for now, I'll try and see if it will work. Thanks!
