This concerns mortar scoping on PC.
There is a bug I can reproduce on mortars, where if you stay in the scope mode it will crash the game. Also when I go into the scope mode on a couple mortars there is an issue where it does not go into the aiming top down view. Instead the scope renders sky and flickers before happening to crash.
Okay I just tested this out at one of my outposts.
-The Mortar scope and gun aiming in general is broken when the FOV setting is not on default.(Steam forums have a post mentioning this)
-The Mortar scope will continue to zoom into the floor, until it sees through the ground (sky blue texture under it) until the game CRASHES.
-setting the FOV slider back to default settings fixes the scope seeing nothing bug but the scope does the endless zoom in and crash.
Hopefully this can be elevated to the dev's as it quite the "anti-fun" and not quite acceptable for game play.
Thanks/
In case this can help anyone here's what I've found out, I've posted this on the top 3 results pages when googling this bug in case it can help anyone looking into it.
FOV adjustment +/- the default will cause the bugged FOV scaling distorted/warped image, may or may not always also cause the infinite zoom too.
Resetting to the default FOV will fix the distorted/warped image, but will result in the infinite zooming in bug, reportedly to the point of crashing the game (I personally never let it go that long).
Workaround: What worked for me was to manually set the FOV # to 1.0 in the gamerprofile.xml (the FC4 config file), yours may be something like 0.99876 or 1.18459. Basically meaning it supports fine-point # settings, but 1.0 worked for me. The downside obviously being some ppl may not be able to play with that FOV, I personally prefer 2 clicks up from the default but I havent noticed it being that bad. I think it's b/c the default is slightly under 1.0 so it's still a bit higher than would be just hitting "reset to default" button in the in-game menu. Not 100% sure, but it'd be easy enough to check if anyones that interested, reset to default in game then exit out and check the # in the xml file.
Originally I just stayed away from using Mortars until (or if) it's ever fixed in a patch, or even tried resetting to default when about to use a Mortar and aim/fire quickly or aim/release until I got the shot dialed in, or close enough to walk it in shot by shot, then reset to my prefered FOV after which i.m.o was more annoying than playing with an FOV of 1.0
