An open letter to Ubisoft after trying to play Far Cry 4

    Hi Ubisoft,

First let me tell you a little about my experience with your company. First of all I always been proud to be an owner of Ubi games. They were always of astounding quality and just great games. I've also read a lot of forumers bashing your company after some allegated saying about PC gamers and how you think we're all demons sent to pirate games. I always was the first to defend you and say how great your game were.

That is until I got Far Cry 4 with my new GTX 970.

I'm not a fan of Uplay but I played through Far Cry 3 with it and never had a single issue. So after my initial experience I was cool with it and managed to like it. I'm also an Origin and Steam user and both of those softwares are great platforms to use, easy and intuitive. You buy a game over there and it is already showing in your Library, awaiting the release date to just click "Play". With Uplay it's not quite that fun and easy experience. You must first buy the game and add it to your Library. But being a pre-prder it will not show in your Library right away, leaving you with a weird feeling in your entrails. So you will guess right that some name dropping might happen concerning your company at that time.

Then the release day happen and you go check your Library in Uplay to start the game but it's still on "pre-ordered" mode. "Why" you will here screamed at you. I bought the game and already added it to my Uplay account and now what? Oh, an email arrive with a game key that you must use to activate your product, product that you bought/already sent a code via Uplay. Still no big deal, simply a bit handholding and denigrating to your customers.

Now on my personal experience in trying to make the game run.

Today, after having a nice evening with my girlfriend I was thrilled to be able to play a bit of Far Cry 4 before going into Morphee's arms for the night. I eagerly click on my Far Cry 4 icon on my desktop to see the game launch! Nice! I play a bit in the settings and launch a single player campaign game. The screen shows a nice little white bar showing me that the game is loading. Then the black void of emptiness appears...I let couple of dozen of seconds pass before I ctrl-alt-del my way to the light again only to find that the game stopped responding.

Still being that optimistic guy I did a couple of Google searches to find that some are having issues with controller softwares and uninstalling them have solved their issues. I actually had the Microsoft Xbox controller software installed and I must publicly apologize for it. So I hasten myself and uninstall this villainous software to purify my machine. After that installation I also verified the integrity of my fresh and clean Far Cry 4 installation. To my surprise the conclusion was that my installation was corrupted, probably by that foul Xbox controller software I had running on my machine. So I start the Purification process with no hesitation.

After maybe 17 minutes of my non so precious time, Uplay prompted me that I didn't had enough space to continue the process of Purification of my game. At that time some more bile stained words came out of my mouth about your illustrious company and I am sorry about that. So I lost no time and started the exocism of many other polluting games I had installed that cluttered my pure machine, then I restarted the Purification process.

After that was done I gently restarted my now pure machine so that any remnants of evil will be destroyed. When my holy computer came back to life I naively started Far Cry 4, that game I awaited for so long. But this time I didn't even got past the Holy Gates of the Creidts and got the "Memory could not be read" heretic message!!!! NOOO!!! So what do you hope I could have done wrong?!??! I was now on the brink of kneeling to the evil power that took my supposed cleansed engine of entertainment.

I am now, again, in the Purification process but this time with a 13 gig of Holy Words of Power to heavenly download again into my Far Cry 4 freah and clean installation.

Do you know where i'm going with this? Why would you treat you customers like that? Why would you make many of us go through the Trials of Holy Cleansing before being able to hope to be able to play one of your game?

And before you ask and lazily propose to "install the latest X, Y and Z drivers", I already have the 344.75 Nvidia drivers installed and everything on my freakingly not bad PC (i7 3770K, GTZ 970, 8gb DDR3, X-Fi Titanium...) up to date just for your game.

I am genuinly sorry for the wall of text but that is now how I feel about Ubisoft. A company that offered so much great games in the past and forced intrusive DRM and softwares on the PC gamers to "prevent" piracy while you could not understand that those that pirated your games were doing it because your games didn't worked on their chosen platform. You see how this is a running circle, an indefinite circle that will run for eternity until you change your opinion on your PC customers.

    - Make quality games, people will buy your games
    - Make underpar games that don't start, freeze and crash, people will pirate your games.

    That is simple as that.

When some pay over $60 for a piece of 0x and 1s to entertain them, they want this piece of codes to actually work on day one, at least launch appropriately and be able to enjoy your months of work on it.

I'm damn glad I got the game for "free" with my 970 because I would have felt some kind of foreign body between the buttcheeks right now and that is not something i'm looking for, even unconscious.

Please Ubisoft, do what must be do to regain the place you fought to gain in times past.

PS: I am sorry if I made grammar errors in this message. I will try to correct them when I feel better about myself.

Oh and I must add: Why do I have to repair again after having done a repair?
Seems like my files are permanently corrupted...way to go Ubisoft...way to go.

My experience has shown that the files just seem to magically corrupt themselves! I'll do 3 clean sweeps and my install is perfect, and then ill check again a couple of hours later and find that some file(s) has managed to get itself corrupted. All this without having spent 1 fraction of a second in-game. Amazing.

And seriously, who's brilliant idea was it to require captcha input for every post?

    I'm now reinstalling the game...
Can't wait for the typical "Did you installed your drivers correctly and if so, i'd recommend to reinstall them or do a fresh Windows installation" comment...

Never been so frustrated about a freaking piece of software.

Thank you for posting this! I have tried dealing with Ubisoft support, but they give me the [EDITED] worst answers like "Have you restarted your computer?" kinda ******** answers. They never seem to blame their own [EDITED] game for having flaws and insist that it's on your end.

You're my new favorite person in the whole world, JomGabbar - or at least in Kyrat! ;-)

I totally agree with you - allthough I have not experienced the problems you have.

I recently became a father, and therefore does not have that much gaming time. I have, however, been playing Far Cry 4 - until the patch the 23rd of December. (BTW: who the hell patches a game just before the holidays?!) Since that patch, myself and a whole lot others have been unable to save progress in game, forcing you to stop playing, as you get bored of playing the same sequences over and over again.
When an official announcement finally came (24th I believe, quite fast I'd say), Ubisoft stated that a patch would come shortly. 7 days later, and "shortly" have suddenly lost it's meaning. At least they could address the issues at hand, and come up with further statements - hell, thats what they do in the telecommunication bussiness, where I happen to work. It's so incredibly easy to publicly announce issues, instead of giving customers the silent treatment (at least in my country). For this, I really hate Ubisoft - even though I love the games (overall).

But Ubisoft support have always, and probably always will be useless.
Good day to you all. In hope of all your issues being resolved!

I'm in almost the exact same situation as you. Similar specs (i5 3570k, GTX G1 970 (Got FC4 free with it), 16GB RAM). When I first got the game, no amount of repairing/reinstallling/changing drivers would get me past Error 0xc0000005. I was a huge fan of FC3 and had high hopes of FC4 so I impatiently waited for a patch rather than get pissed quite yet. Fast forward a month or so and patch 1.5. Glorious! I can actually start the game! Oh wait, the game crashes to black screen and I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to close it down before I reach the end of the prologue every time now instead. Wonderful. I haven't bothered opening a ticket because I have a ridiculous amount of angry posts since FC4 launched telling me exactly how that will go. The Watch Dogs fiasco compelled me to not buy any more of their games until I see some dramatic improvement to how they conduct business with their fans among the PC community. FC4 has just ensured I'll make it a point to dodge free offers of their games as well moving forward. =/

EDIT: And seriously, what IS up with a Captcha with every post?
