    New Map Editor Interview

    Source

Julien Lamoureux is a man of the people. As the lead designer of the In-Game Editor, his focus is always on the community and creating the tools they’ll use to create their own unique Far Cry experience.

“The first thing we did when we started to work on the editor was analyze what was done on Far Cry 3 and look at the reception from the community,” says Julien. “What was clear, as we saw on YouTube, the forums, everywhere, was that a lot of people were using it not necessarily to build multiplayer maps, but to create a really special experience and basically play around with the toys that were provided in what we call the sandbox mode. It was something that Far Cry was allowing that a lot of games weren’t.”

One look at the Far Cry map community makes it clear that Julien’s done his research. The creativity and ingenuity is evident in the elaborate worlds they’ve created and even the missions—or all-new games—they’ve designed with the tools. It’s something that inspired Julien to broaden the scope of what was possible in the editor.

“The idea when we started was to make sure that we could deliver the Outpost Creator, but we also wanted to deliver some spice: little twists for the player that would make the entire experience feel a bit different from the rest of the campaign. So in addition to the game modes we added [Hunt, Extraction, Outpost and Assault], we came up with the idea of adding modifiers. You can play around with the amount of health, you can play around with the inventory you start with, you can decide that, for instance, you're immune to fire or explosions, you can make it so your vehicle never gets destroyed in collisions. Then we also pushed some a little bit further: so you can die in one shot, kill in one shot. One of the craziest ones is you can literally increase the distance you can jump up to 50 metres and you can play with the gravity. It gives you a totally different way of playing."

Of course, it’s not only about the more outlandish abilities; Julien’s aware that some fans just want to up the challenge for themselves and the players who play their maps: “We saw there some players had an appetite for a more hard-core experience, so we wanted to provide other modifiers for them. Everything from death upon detection to a countdown that's always ticking in the level, so you have to complete it in a certain time.”

And what it’s all about is giving the fans as much power as possible. “We wanted to make sure that as a creator, you can design your own level, but on top of that, give you this extra twist of really being a game designer. So you're not only designing the level, you're designing how it's played.”

It’s something Julien and his team are all passionate about: the greatest honour they can have is knowing that fans are making the Map Editor their own. “At the end of the day,” Julien explains, “this tool can only exist if the community decides to embrace it.
This all sounds REALLY awesome. But still, no information in relation to if we can make maps for the MULTIPLAYER side.

Still not happy about how quiet they're being about this game's features. Eyebrow raising. Making single player maps sounds awesome, but I really want to build arena's where folks do battle against each other.

I don't like how this is sounding. Why, Ubi?

    mhmmmm. Interesting.

I must say that everything in this article sound pretty interesting. Especially for a buddy of mine named Robert Mauro. All this talk about creating outposts and sandbox experiences does frighten me.

Even though I don't care much about multiplayer I think the commentators here are right. It looks more like Julien Lamoureux locked himself in a room with his computer to build the editor the way HE liked it to be and not listen to the community. If you limit the editor too much in the first place and then only look at what people build with such a too much limited editor, then you do not get a clear view of what the community wants from a game editor. Crytek made the same mistake with their CryEngine in game editor. Leave things out of the editor because THEY did not need it, but forget that their community might wanted the functionality to stay in because it was already in there. If you guys at Ubisoft want to create an editor, you guys should ADD things to it and leave things that are already in there in it and only improve the editor.

Don't become like Microsoft where you think you know what your customers want or how your customers think, and then when you notice your customers think different then try to limit them even more or be a pain in the *** just because people want(ed) something different then what you want people to want.

If you become too much of a pain in the ***, you don't get our money but you will get a finger. And if so, you should not blame us for giving you the finger, but blame yourself that you did not listen and probably asked for getting the finger. And if you don't care about what your customers and community wants, then you deserve getting the finger.

But I hope the editor is worth it and Ubisoft will learn to listen to their community and care about their customers. Because in the end we customers pay your salary.

Me, Mauro and Hayden all got to talk quite a bit to Julien when we were there, and you are wrong about this one (don't mean to be rude). I can't speak on behalf of the others, but I think we should realize why they are doing this. The community hasn't truly embraced the editor if you compare the people who loved making maps to how many actually bought the previous game (6 million+, right?). We who love custom map multiplayer are a very small minority of the Far Cry community right now, and even though we want our favorite features to be improved and expanded upon, it wouldn't make sense for Ubi to prioritize us over what everybody else is loving about the game.

A lot of the guys from Ubisoft has seen videos on YouTube of what people like about their game and how they use the editor. Haven't we all seen that a lot more people use the FC3 editor to create single player maps, fun maps, survival maps which all use animals and vehicles? They have improved the 4th game drastically to support creations like that.
When 6 million people buy a game, there will always be sacrifices to make when they change the structure for their next installment because people see different appeals in the game.

I personally also think it would suck if we can't create custom multiplayer maps with vehicles, but if we really want that to return, we need to let Ubisoft know how they can bring that back while still making a profitable game that everyone will love, not just a few hundreds from the forums and the more casual part of the community who play it without giving feedback. I tried making a video a while back where I gave both credit and negative feedback, and I talked about how much potential a game like FC4 could have in terms of multiplayer. But recreating FC2 with improved graphics, movement and a bigger editor isn't going to make it blow up IMHO.

Look at Battlefield and COD. These games would be nothing if they had poor connectivity, no responsive movement and technical issues in general, but they do have this all right for the most part, and look how well they sell! If Far Cry 4 had the same, but with a map editor in addition, there wouldn't even be a conversation of what the FPS game is...

It doesn't matter how many copies were sold. It was Juliens task to work on the editor and bring us a new improved version of it. It was Ubisofts decision to very much limit the editor in the first place even though they could have made it much more open with less (stupid) restrictions. So they should have realized that setting such restrictions also limits the interest of people to build maps. So they themselves are the cause of it, and now that they have probably cut out the MP from the editor it will probably lead to even less people interested to build maps. So is their next clue for FC5 in two years time to remove the editor completely because hardly anybody were building maps? NO! Ubisoft themselves is destroying the map building community with all of their stupid restrictions. But they won't admit that of course. Because they are good at staying silent. Too chicken to deal with things the right way or admit their failure (again) in trying to do so.

I have to agree with this, and then add to it.

We are a minority because Ubisoft does not allow it to flourish the way it needs to. Lack of meaningful marketting, communication, focus testing, beta testing, and post support is what makes is that minority. Far Cry 4 is a prime living example right now. 90% of it's marketting has been about the campaign/co-op, and little to nothing about Multiplayer. And the multiplayer trailer we got was very confusing, and the messaging doesn't do it any justice. Seemingly every day on a weekly basis, we get some new "Story Trailer", when they could be cleaning up that multiplayer message. People are already hyped about the campaign, what more do they need?

And I really hate when people say "Well Far Cry has always been about the campaign!" junk. It's like that because Ubisoft MADE it that way, not realizing the diamond-in-the-rough they have, and the potential in this multiplayer theoretically.

There is a reason games like Skyrim, Left 4 Dead/ L4D2, Counter-Strike GO, Call of Duty 4, Black Ops 1, etc are still alive and kicking major tail on the PC platform right now. Because they allow for CUSTOM OPTIONS. Skyrim doesn't even HAVE multiplayer (well, outside of mods). There is a reason why COD4 has more players than COD: Ghosts. Mod support and dedicated servers.

If only Ubis would embrace the idea that they can cleverly market their Map Editor, they could be a contender in this multiplayer gaming arena.

Uh what? You have seen the editor so you know if it possible or not.Why would you write this?

It could be you forgot this info after the alcohol soaked nights in canada, unlikey.
It could be that you trying to misdirect us coz of the embargo, unlikey.
Third option you just didnt see this option while you were there coz its just isnt in fc4, most likey.
