On the stronger next gen console, the PS4...why are the shadows created by the dynamic lights (not sunlight, though this is dynamic) SO pixelated?
Here is a screenshot of a dynamic light source in Evolution.
They look much cleaner on Evolution, much. Any reason for this?
When I made the past X amount of tracks for Fusion, I specifically didn't include the dynamic light sources as they looked rough as can be. I'm aware of optimizing and engine, but how can an old engine be more efficient?
I did some testing in fusion on PC (Ultra settings for testing)
Sun angle 90, ambient color pure black to add more contrast.
Left = Dynamic light at the edge of it's range / most pixelated
Middle = Dynamic Light with more range, so brighter / slightly less pixelated / does not render things like tree leafs
Right = Sunlight = least pixelated / renders details properly
I agree dynamic shadows are pretty ugly right now, and combined with the fact that the whole light turn off when the light source goes off screen is definately not an ideal situation, even with more capacity for the engine to handle more lights at the same time (less light blocking).
The 2nd picture, the dynamic lights get more pixelated at a distance, and will turn completely off when even further away.
The right sunlight "hole" will eventually fade but stays round and not blocky even at a large distance.
I can understand a performance standpoint on shadows but the sunlight does a much better job right now, even using 1 dynamic shadow properly often does not look right at all.
I dunno how forum handles image links sizing but here's the full links:

I took this at 720 windowed, but full screen 1080 still has the same pixelation.
You may try Photobucket. That site probably downsizes your photos. You're at 250x146 pixels there.
I viewed my screenshot at 3x original size and STILL, the dynamic light source shadows look much better...haha How is this?
edit: Looks like Photobucket worked.
I think the shadows of the rider are the best example. Those look good in comparison. Having an option to use better shadows would be nice or just implement it into the next gen consoles/PC.
Even at 2am on a Sunday, I post...I want an answer 5 minutes later.Originally Posted by ShiftySamurai Go to original post
Yes...I am demented.
I am curious as to why this is, so if you find out that would be great....for one guy on the forum and maybe the other who replied in this post.
You would think on the PS4 you could bring smoother dynamic light shadows. I know the framerate was dropped to 30fps, then I believe even 15fps on very distant ones.
The close immediate shadows though from a direct light source (not the sun) are brutally pixelated...very odd.
