Thomas Roach previews Far Cry 4 from EGX 2014…
When Far Cry 4 was first showed off I was really excited to get my hands on it. I had loved Far Cry 3 and I will say that it was one of the best games of the last generation console. Far Cry 4 has a lot to live up to in my eyes and from what I have seen from trailers and demos it looks like it wont disappoint. However this was not the case when I played the game at EGX.
I understand that these demos are not long at all and don’t showcase every aspect of the game which is fine however what I was given at EGX left me somewhat let down.
During the demo you play a mission where you raid a fortress, similar to the outpost raids in Far Cry 3. This did give you a great understanding of how combat works and what some of the environments looks like but frankly this is not what I wanted to see. Personally Far Cry 3 was driven by the characters and the stories. I felt the demo should have showed off a bit more of the story and maybe a cut scene or two.
When you start the mission you can see how big and beautiful the world is that we will get to explore in the game. We could see the peaks of the Himalayas in great detail from where you are standing. The graphics were all very impressive except when you are moving. This was a real let down for me. It may just take players time to acclimatise to the fast motion of movement but the screen would almost go blurry if you moved to fast. This may just be the case for the demo and not the finished product.
I also felt that the controls were too sensitive. Going back to fast movement when you look around to aim the controls are very fluid and even the smallest movements would take you way off your target. This gave the game a somewhat sloppy feel to it. Hopefully this can be adjusted in game or players will be able to get use to it.
On a positive note the fortress you raided was very detailed and enemies up close looked very realistic. There were a range of weapons you could use to tackle the mission and after completing the mission you could try again attempting a different route. The game would give your 3 options which were ‘Sneak’, ‘Ride’ and ‘Fly’.
With Sneak you would be given a crossbow and other silent weapons, this is probably the most fun way to tackle the mission that was at hand in my opinion. Fly allowed you to fly in on a gyro and take enemies out with heavy weapon. Ride allowed you to jump on the back of the elephants wondering the world and break down the fortress gates and knock down en.
Overall the demo was a disappointment for me but because I am such a fan of the series I am willing to give the game a chance. As I said it may just take some getting used to or what I was playing was not the finished product.
Far Cry 4 is set for release 18 November 2014.

I am concerned with the mention of blurring when moving fast because Far Cry 2 gave us such a horrific time with this, ok it was Malaria but when running fast in multiplayer it also went blurry - please tell us this is not back, also the auto aim in FC3 was appalling - so what is going on now, if this guy is correct then it appears to be no better - I hope this was an old demo they were playing because it is like an alarm bell ringing - Is this the reason why we have seen so little footage or is the guy simply a clown who got it wrong ?
The demo is what you have already seen, the raid on the fort with the elephants - and done in different ways - however not to take anything away from the guys experience - different people might have different opinions and as such - it should be taken at face valueOriginally Posted by KrAzY1337 Go to original post.
Of course it is, why would you guys show off new footage? I mean, you guys have only been talking up the elephants since E3, it's now almost October. We get it, this game has elephants. Oh, and raids.Originally Posted by Mr_Shade Go to original post
Same for me I have not noticed anything bad from previous videos - I was thinking it was maybe a new version they were playing.Originally Posted by FR_Player-One Go to original post
Since he mentions the blur when moving... I guess it's motion blur that is as exaggerated as in FC3 (I don't know if consoles had it, but the amount was way too high on PC.), however, it was easy to disable in the game's files (though that isn't so simple on consoles, in case next-gen ones will get the motion blur, and I believe they will.)
FC3 had it implemented really, I mean, really, badly. When in a vehicle, it blurred the interior of the vehicle you were driving more than the surrounding environments (e.g. probably just camera motion blur, not per-object motion blur.)
