    Disappointing pachyderms

When seeing the screenshots & vids for elephant & rhino, I immediatley realized that they're made wrong. Without hair.
Real elephants have tons of tiny hair all over the body, concentrating densely on the head. While ingame elephant got just a little hair on the head (visible in gameplay videos when mounted) and totally no hair on body. Even the tail is bald!!!
Rhino ears in the game have no signs of hair, despite being fluffy in reality.

The elephant and rhino should be given more realism! Leaving the pachyderms in their current state is a disgrace, considering that monkeys are rendered up to tiniest hairs.
With correctly made hair, those animals can truly became the most realistic ones in gaming history.

    Everyone please compare:
    Ingame

    REAL
    Body hair

    Long sensitive hair on trunk.

    Eyelashes

    Tail brush

    Same with Indian Rhino:
    Ingame

REAL - very hairy ears, and also some hair on the tail (which is certainly left bald)

Little things like this don't really bother me. Hair is REALLY hard to make look good. To truly next gen the hair would require an incredible polygon count to be worth adding. If they went with the normal flat hair textures it just wouldn't look good. To me it's probably better that they left the hair off completely. (Plus I can think of a few things they absolutely need to be spending their time and money on )

Wow good post and well spotted.

However, I should have mentioned that I had requested that all pachyderms be shaved in the Tibet region due to my dislike of body hair and the result is possibly what we now see in the game... I take full responsibility for such an erroneous omission.

Well, from your enthusiastic replies it looks like that only biologists like me really care about the appearance of ingame animals.

3d Hair is NOT hard to render - snow leopard's & honey badger's whiskers are 3d, so as easy to recreate at thick, wire-like elephant hair.

The same error was made by Frontier Developments in their recent Xbox game "Zoo Tycoon", claiming to have most realistic CGI animals ever - while elephants are completely bald here, with only babies having some hair on the head.
Please understand, elephants in Far Cry are MEANT to be closely observed and interacted. Moar hair would only add to feel of realism.
The game shouldn't lag if an elephant has a few hundred more hair on the skin. At least give it a tail brush!
I'm not asking for 'impossible' things like adding genitalia (remember, those Asian elephants are all males since they have tusks!) or pooping...

ZooTycoon elephant for comparison. No much difference from FC4, yeah?

    Lol topic of the month!

And let me guess this is the topic where Ubi Com Dev shows up. Ubi will promise to fix this massive problem which has worried the whole FC community long time.
Elephant hair before multiplayer and editor.

I never said it's hard to render. I said it's hard to make look good. The monkey looks good because it's COVERED in hair. You can't see the point where the hair meets the skin. When you can see that point it usually looks pretty weird. On an animal like an elephant where it's not completely covered you can clearly see where the hair meets the animals mesh in many places. To make hair on fairly hairless animals look good the hair itself would likely have to be 3d as opposed to flat like on the monkey.

    I appreciate your sarcasm.
Players like you deserve green elephants for the game, since lust for fun prevails over realism demand, as usual.

I know about fur shaders lol.
In FC3 mammals were plain textured, with fur effect only on tiger's head. Now all mammals are improved, except so-called 'hairless' ones.
Alpha hair for elephants is the quickest solution. But I doubt if they fit on UV map properly in such large number, If a separate alpha plane's width should not be smaller than that of main body's poly side.
