    Mappers, Map filtering and Rating

First off this is suggested with dedicated servers in mind.
If there must be a rating system can we get one that works a little better and gives quality mappers a bit more focus.

How i suggest it be done is as follows:
-Maps are rated on a positive only system no down votes or tin systems just a single 'click' if you like.
-Mappers also get rated based on adding total ratings from uploaded maps.

Then when searching maps have the filters for rating as normal but with optional additional filters of:
-object count(obviously more placed objects the higher chance a mappers spent some time on it.)
    -mapper rating

Both would have a slider or something to vary the values they are filtering to and would also be able to filter along side the other filters instead of only selecting one.

For instance if you want to find only the best maps from known mappers you would set filters something like :
    -Map Rating >100
    -Mapper Rating >1000

If you wanted to search for the hidden gems however:
    -Object count >100

And maps from mappers who may only released one good map so far:
    -Mapper rating >30
    -Object count >100

    *figures obviously random*

This way you should be more able to sort quality from random foliage maps and mappers who are known for taking care in their work automatically get a boost for search purposes on their new works.

Players can also favorite a map, this puts the map into a players own preferred map list for later use.

A server host then has the option of hosting their own list but also allowing people to vote their own from their favorites list so map rotations don't get stale. Then at the end of the round total votes pick map. If the server and users don't have it they download it automatically before the next round is started, and have the option of saving the map for later use if they like it.

The rating and map filter system definitely needs to be focused on more. I would also like to see a download count for each map uploaded. It would be helpful to see which of your maps get downloaded most, so you can see what style of map making of yours is most popular.

how about a search filter with hours put in the map? often the more time put in, the better the map.

    0-1 hours
    1-5 hours
    5-25 hours
    25-100+ hours

or something. just thinkin out loud

do you mean time people have played the map or time the creator spent working on the map because if its the latter then well i could just leave the game running and take take advantage of it like that.(supposing that im some d bag moron who likes to use all the loop holes)

yh i ment how many hours the maker put in it.

Ofcourse you could do that and probably there will be some fools who do that. but why waste that time? when people open your map they see immidiatly that you cheated and probably remove your map. its more of a setting to thin out the maps of mappers who put some energy in it.

The time spent building a map is a good idea, but it may be inaccurate for its quality tho.
Some people build faster than others for the same quality, or sometime you will re-do a whole section of the map you're not happy with (spend more time) for the same quality or just a bit enhanced.
Or some mappers, maybe new mappers, will be learning how to use the tools etc for the first time, so they spend a lot of time on the map, but in the end it's not a "good" map. ETC

Anyway, the more infos the better. And the more filters the better.

It will never be completely honest but as long as the community decides It's fine with me, the system with the 1-5 stars on FC2 was simple and effective really.

It was annoying to download a map on FC3 and then read comments like the map is to dark, not enough detail, bad spawning ( well duh ) ...

All based on a single time experience by one individual.

The rating systems have been a bit controversial in the past.

I would like to see feedback that is only viewed by the mapper and not attached to the map itself. The map itself could possibly have somthing written by the map author to advise what type of map it is.
Also possibly a comment box at the end of the match where players have the option to message the mapper and give feedback directly. (then again that could spur hate mail).

The "fixed list of comments" in FC3 MP were not very helpful to the mapper.. e.g. too much sniping... thats something that a skilled mapper would incorporate into their map intentionally.

We already have a feedback system within the community for some maps - and thats the guys who do a great job of creating youtube videos with in-depth reviews. Showcasing of maps is a very good way to help promote the best

The 5 star system in FC2 MP was a bit weird and I dont know how it worked to be honest. We saw on PS3 the likes of demidevil with 1000's an 1000's of downloads and his maps were rated 1 star. Obviously alot of people liked his/her maps and played them regularly. The 5 star system messed up a few times over the years, and some 4 and 5 star maps immediately went down to 2 stars for some unbeknown reason.

What is great though, and something that has been consistent throughout the series, is that player made maps are incorporated into the main multiplayer experience, whether its a list of Ubisoft Recommended Maps, or Gold Tier maps, its always something to strive towards as a mapper, and also a good way for the devs to give some recognition to the mappers.

The Original Poster has some very good points on how to judge a map on its merits. And I agree, maps should have a cumulative system so that they rise to the top rather than a system where maps are demoted.

About ratings, in fc3 it was a mess but fc2's star system didnt work either.

I think so long you can give negative critic, people will abuse it. Its easier to destroy something nice then to make it. Some think by taking out the competion their maps will get more attention.

So keep it simple just 1 positive vote per map and nothing else. The best and most liked maps will rise to the top.

FCIP had no way to rate maps and no way to download maps unless you joined a match and downloaded from the host.

Every method so far is prone to abuse, with FC2 lots just gave 1 star and others tactically vote - some are obsessed with download stats and it became so bad that they would be obsessed with hosting their own maps to build up stats - in my opinion it made the game a lot more selfish.

FC3 map tagging was a total ****ing joke.

No system will work and I imagine they will screw it up again as they stated in FC3 that they had made the system so much better when in reality they made it so much worse.

With the older games you could see 5 or 6 people hosting a quality map so that was the best way to know a map was liked as it would be played in playlists which threw up good maps by different people.

I would just say give a figure on times downloaded and played - Allow the author to give a brief description that is tied to the map file so if any knob head steals the map the description is watermarked along with the original authors name and cant be changed.

And whoever mentioned favoring the map I like that option - nothing is fool proof but lets try to get people playing in and sharing maps together rather than just running dedicated servers for stats and their own egos.

You know it is a nice feeling when players come into a map they like and give compliments in the lobby - Lets build the community after the turmoil of FC3.
