FC4 – The Secrets of Shangri-La Unveiled: Backstory, Level Design, Cross-Gen and More

Far Cry 4 Interview – The Secrets of Shangri-La Unveiled: Backstory, Level Design, Cross-Gen and More

Far Cry 4 will include a series of intriguing missions set in the mythical realm of Shangri-la, which will serve as a way to tell the backstory of the game’s world in a quite original way.

At Gamescom we caught up with Level Design Director (for the Shangri-la missions) Matt West, and we had a nice conversation about quite a few aspects, ranging from the backstory, to the level design, passing by the difficulties (or lack of thereof) or working on a cross-platform game.

It’s interesting to learn that the engineers at Ubisoft have developed tools that put developers in the position not to worry at all about having to work on old and underpowered consoles, and that West never ran into issues like memory bottlenecks during his work in creating the rich environments of Shangri-la.

And what kind of tools did you get from the tech guys? Should have been the follow up question, i guess

Probably "use vegetation collection X only on development builds, replace with collection Y on release builds" and development-time higher quality assets (Or better ones made specifically for trailers).

Just like back in Far Cry 3.

Sounds good, seems like the AI will offer a decent challenge in this one. I had to LOL at the part where QTE was discussed though. Seems the guy doesn't know the difference between timed reaction prompts and a distraction takedown.
