Special Edition Podcast – Far Cry 4

Last Article from Game Informer - To listen to the Podcast CLICK HERE

We've reached the end of our month of exclusive content covering Far Cry 4.

We hope you've learned a lot along the way, and thanks for submitting so many questions for this podcast. We spoke to Far Cry 4's creative director Alex Hutchinson while visiting Ubisoft Montreal about his experience with Assassin's Creed III and his vision for Far Cry 4.

To follow that up, we called him up just to ask him all of our community's very specific questions on the game. I (Ben Hanson) am hosting this episode along with Ben Reeves, and we get some more information on Far Cry 4's environmental hazards, multiplayer modes, map editor, and so much more.

Listen to the podcast below, or subscribe on iTunes, and let us know what you think of the show in the comments below.

Some things I picked up on while listening.

Thin air is a factor - in certain areas we need oxygen

That is an image of a Demon Fish which they confirmed is in the game.
There is no split screen because it would have caused a massive graphical downgrade and there was not the time to fit it into the game.

Question - Is there competitive multiplayer in the game.
Answer - It will be there, & we are super hopeful that this one sort of cracks it a little bit and builds a fan base, its all new stuff its really cool and we will be talking about it a lot in the next couple of months

You can shoot while driving all vehicles, forward on left stick is accelerate - There is a hovercraft / quad / trucks / boats and other stuff.

Fire arrows, Molotov, flame throwers are in the game.

Question - Is the map editor making a return
Answer - He (This must be the guy working on the map editor) is pushing super hard on the map editor, it's by far the most robust yet, it's really quick and easy to use.
The only debate now is how much / how many extra features can we squeeze into it - Do we try and do post release support, Theres talk about trying to make it even bigger this time around to make sure people know about it.
It's the type of thing that the more people that engage with it, the easier it is for us to justify spending money on it - so we are going to have a big push for it I am sure.

Question - Can we disable the HUD ?
Answer - Yes you can turn off the HUD you can turn off Each Element Individually.

The whole podcast is packed with really cool information. Still, I think the most important answer is the last one at 35:43 about multiple endings in the game.

There are [multiple endings], but they are less clear than in, say, Far Cry 3... We tried really hard to blur the line between gameplay and narrative and to allow sort of more player expression in the game... Even the rebel factions that you allied with during the game, you can actually pick sides and eventually you'll be involved in this sort of power struggle within that faction. That can played out differently in terms of what you do... especially the antagonist depending on what you choose to do at the end. There is a different outcome there. Instead of just sort of being A/B branch at the end there are lots of minor branches all the way along... and this changes objectives, sometimes, you know, missions. It adds some objectives to some of your missions. We really wanted it to be there and not to be as visible as in lot of games... you do not want to feel like you choose a light side or a dark side, we wanted you to feel like the game sort of molded itself to the way you played. And when I came into the Game Informer offices and I said to you, guys: Oh, hey, last time I did A, B and C. And you'd say: Wow, I did B but I didn't see A or C. And I was off doing D. So we had in some sense personality in the story missions as well as open world.

Sounds like they're trying to reuse/improve Far Cry 2 factions and non-linear missions. And that's a really really good thing. Can't wait to know more about these features.
