Will Escape Maps be possible in Far Cry 4

MAP EDITOR: Featuring an improved, easy-to-navigate interface and a ton of versatile tools, the Far Cry 4 map editor lets you create your ideal map and publish it to the community. The power is in your hands to design a unique paradise, a bit of outsider art, or an unforgiving death trap.

The wording above is found on the Ubi Blog and can be viewed HERE

    Unforgiving Death Trap

What comes to mind when you read that ?
For me I think Escape Maps and think - will the editor finally have traps and things to make the Escape type map even more enjoyable.

For those who don't know what Escape Maps are here is a video of a map by Kari666 on PS3 (Far Cry 2) called "TRAP HOUSE"

Basically you start off in a room and have to get out, you are then in a complex which has many rooms, some you will die instantly or become trapped when you enter - others are full of tricks and traps and if you are not careful you will find yourself re-spawning very quickly.

Once you die you start off right at the beginning again because all the spawns are placed in the same room so the only way to get to the end is to follow and watch what other players do and learn from them or take pot luck and learn from your mistakes - eventually if you have the patience / the skill and a little bit of luck you will reach the end.

That one above was made by myself and Supascoopa_ as a coop project, it is very difficult to die on this map unless a player from the opposite team kills you (the general rule is you help each other to navigate the course, these maps are not really designed for PVP Combat but at the same time weapons are often used / needed to progress beyond certain points.

You will notice it took a little over 19 mins to complete the map, this was impossible in Far Cry 3 because the longest we were allowed to play a map was 15 mins then the match ended - some of these Escape maps can go on for well over an hour, the Host of the match would often keep the game going while players were in the map - this was possible in far Cry Predator and Far Cry 2 because we could set the match timer to Infinite.

I guess the map above DEATH BY BARRELS could be viewed as a Death Trap type map, there is no purpose except to have fun by sending barrels down at one another - if you die you re-spawn in the cylinder and have to navigate up to the top, the barrels had their own physics and could be pushed (you had to remove the FC2 Update for this to work)

The main issue was barrels stacking up on the map, it crippled performance, we found that by making a section of the map just beyond the playable zone the barrels would simply disappear which kept performance more stable - this was just designed for up to 4 players.
The idea came from some maps I got to see on the 360 side.

Far Cry 2 had some degrading pieces / items for us to use in the editor which were amazing to have.
The glass which could be shot but also re-spawned eventually, the palette also could be blown up / shot and this too re-spawned - some explosives could be shot and they would roll until they exploded, other items degraded (blew up) when hit with the correct weapon.

This video below was made for full PVP combat in Deathmatch or Team Games and had custom structures which could be blown up.

I think that was possibly my best map on FC2 which I made, either that or Long Return.

With Far Cry 3 we got a couple of doors that could be blown up and there was a couch / settee which had cushions that floated, at a guess I would say the exploding barrels floated but I could be wrong, there was also a fence which had physics but other than that FC3 was extremely disappointing when compared to all the fences and items with FC2 that had their own physics.

    SPROUTS 01 / PLANT POT

That plant pot could be pushed and used to jump over higher ledges, it floated on water - it was even possible to stick an IED to the item and push it in water or on land - DEATHWEAPONx even made a dragon just from that item.

You could even walk inside the dragons mouth and into it's belly to pick up the Diamond, Just goes to show what can be created from such a simple shape - one thing I would love them to do with FC4 is have a folder just for random shapes and colors, just simple stuff like lego but maybe circles / squares / rectangles / triangles - etc - It is amazing what these talented map builders can create.

Mikk Q totally dominated with the Concrete items and the colonial fencing, no one built structures like he dd but again maps like this were not really possible with FC3 because of the draw distance on the large majority of the items, most pieces appear and disappear into and out of view which makes it very tough if you want to see things far into the distance, the only option then is to narrow it down to which items have a better draw distance - I hope with Far Cry 4 that the PC and PS4 / XB1 grant some better draw distances with all that extra power they have.

I am always amazed at how people lined up those complex structures with such precision in Far cry 2 and FC3

FAR CRY 3 on PC had a Rotate Items by Degrees option, it is a huge shame that this was not included in the console version of the game because that would have made things so much easier for us, that and a SNAP TOOL - with those I would have no excuses and the sky would be the limit.

It would be brilliant to see these Escape maps return, Especially those by Liam / Razor / Simplewig - and although I am one of the worst players around on these maps I do enjoy making them even if I do borrow ideas from others

So what are your thoughts on this mention of an unforgiving death trap ?

For those who like to look over some of the maps from the 360 side of FC3 check out RAZORS channel HERE.

The Arena sounds very appealing / interesting to me.

I really hope we can make these Arena style maps using the editor, including A.I. and also allowing players to join online - the thoughts of a fight to the death / there can only be one winner sounds very appealing especially online and with A.I.

Imagine players starting the match and as one dies the dead player then gets the view from an alive player and has the option to scroll through other players until there is only one victor remaining - also to create and share your arenas online and to choose to add animals or human A.I. or both would be fantastic.

I can't wait to hear some info on how all this works.

Question - Is the map editor making a return

Answer - He (This must be the guy working on the map editor) is pushing super hard on the map editor, it's by far the most robust yet, it's really quick and easy to use.
The only debate now is how much / how many extra features can we squeeze into it - Do we try and do post release support, There's talk about trying to make it even bigger this time around to make sure people know about it.
It's the type of thing that the more people that engage with it, the easier it is for us to justify spending money on it - so we are going to have a big push for it I am sure.

    Really loving that info above.

Question - Is there competitive multiplayer in the game.

Answer - It will be there, & we are super hopeful that this one sort of cracks it a little bit and builds a fan base, its all new stuff its really cool and we will be talking about it a lot in the next couple of months.

They sound hopeful, sometimes new / a change can be a good thing so it will be interesting to see what they do to the multiplayer side of things.

Question - Can we disable the HUD ?
Answer - Yes you can turn off the HUD you can turn off Each Element Individually.

I really hope that we get options to turn off the minimap in Multiplayer (if there is a minimap that is)

The best part of the podcast I have heard so far is when he admitted the Multiplayer wasn't up to a good enough standard

I found it depressing when he mentioned multiplayer when asked about Far Cry 3 - the reason FC2 and FC3 were not as popular as FC1 (PC) and FCIP (Console) was because they brought in a lot of changes that did not work. (no need for me to discuss things because it has been said so many times)

However that is the issue for the games company, rather than Alex Hutchinson saying we did not use that part of the game it would be better if he knew the history which I am sure he does - So the answer would be that those who made the MP were a little out of touch with what the community really wanted and what worked before should work again rather than bring in so many changes.

Freezing out players from doing what they could in previous games and releasing a game with issues is why that section was a failure.

I am really looking forward to seeing the new stuff in this editor Dapper, I also hope they keep adding things to it after release - that goes for MP as well.

    Nice post Champ !

    A few things required that UBI has changed after FC2 that were gamebreakers for escape maps ;

    - Time limitations in the MP
    - No custom lobbies
    - Taking out the "out of bounds" warning in the map editor, only showing in MP.
    - Not having the same player movement in the editor vs MP
    - No sliding in the editor
    - The player had other dimensions in the editor which made it impossible to use elevators

As an add-on it would be nice to be able to set a checkpoint and be able to remotely trigger doors.

THIS is what I have my eye on. I LOVE to make maps. And I don't wanna spend a week making one, only for it to get 24 downloads. I'm not close to the best mapper out there, but my maps get a lot of detail, and balance. They got THOUSANDS of downloads in Far Cry 2. Suddenly on Far Cry 3, maps are invisible. What a terrible system that was.

There were a lot of new mappers that tuned in later on escape mapping on FC2, One of my personal favourites was Alpha SGT 14.

I loved Playing this map, even when it was in development. Alpha has great talent with the editor, looking at maps he never finished (in both FC2/3) made me want to keep making maps just to try and up my skill to his level
