Some people like their personal space and expect consent to be met before it is violated. It could also be in his culture, Daddy issues or being touched inappropriately before...

Touching people without their approval is an act of assertion or disrespect, like Alpha Domination, not standing up to it is a sign of weakness and submission.

I don't think addictions qualify as object life choices, so without getting into a semantic debate about it; we all have weakness and not only are they something we should help each other overcome but we also have to be open to help in the first place.
