You used to be a top developer. Trials HD. Trials EVO. Games played by millions of people.
Then you did Trials Gold on the PC .... did not work, stutter, graphic problems. China made - a telling sign.
Then you did it again with Trials Fusion: this time, you started scamming the users by releasing the game WITHOUT multiplayer - even if we payed for it, and a sub-par Editor. It is still not there even if i paid for it.
And then this cheapest of all scams, where you hope some kids click on "buy more gems" and mom forgot to take the credit card data out of the iOS Store / Google settings.
You go the cheapest and dirtiest of all ways, the one reserved to the scam shops - trying to scam young kids - which have no real idea what is going on - and literally getting people out of 99$ for something which do not even guarantee the game can be completed.
You did not even the decency to put a cap on it - like if you spend more than 50$, then all upgrades are open. Not even that. You married a business model which is costing the Redlynx brand all is reputation, just because some of your tie-wearing bosses decided that scamming people is a more lucrative business model than just doing good games. And Trials Frontier would be a game I would be glad to spend 50 $ on it.
You decided that letting people invest like 20 hours in the game and THEN asking money so they can advanced with it is a good idea "to make money". And even if they put 300$ in they *still* are not getting the upgrades - how much money it cost to upgrade all bikes ? 10.000 US$ ?
Shame on you RedLynx / Ubisoft. I only hope the fact that by googling "trials frontier" most links you find describe what for a scam you are running here and people will make a wide berth on you.
You don't have to play the game. They aren't forcing you.
I guess the frustration people are feeling is because there are two new Trials games out, one that allows you to play freely but is sub par in every department and one which is a phenomenally good game but monetises play time and progression to a ridiculous degree. We know there won't be another Trials game for a while so all we have are these two abominations.
For me, I'll keep playing Frontier until I can't tolerate the grinding and waiting anymore and I'll revisit Fusion every time a DLC I mistakenly pre paid for is released.
this thread can not be made enough. i agree totally.
its sad that i play this game more than anything else even with all my complaints.
the worst part is how redlynx has suddenly went MIA since the watchdogs release which obviously had an impact on this game with the servers getting overloaded.
I know Im not forced. But if I play for 10 hours or so, and then "discover" Im toasted because I spent some time getting fast times and now the robot matches me with top-100 people.. doing the trebuchet staff 100 times and then *break* just so in front of the finishing line because - hear this - If 'm good at the game I get *punished* with a even stronger opponent ? which happens to have an upgrade that I need - what - 48 hours and tons of grinding to do ?Originally Posted by Mandrake2007 Go to original post
Of course I'm not forced. And I stopped playing. But I cant be mightly p**sed off that a former great company REDYLNX is now delivering this scam. You would feel the same if you buy Mercedes car for 10 years, and suddendly discover the new model you just bought falls off and requires repairs every 2 months.
Its called GOODWILL VALUE and this is what Redlynx is burning at this moment, does not matter if they disappear as long the mighty business tie-wearer managers can squeeze cash out of it.
It's doubly sad because of how consumer centric they used to be. Trials 2 was supported above and beyond the call of duty (until it almost became a totally different, and much better game) and they never asked for another penny. Their latest offerings can only be described as having contempt towards their users.
its frustrating because i want to support this game and would gladly pay some money but not for only temporary gains. i would easily pay at least close to the cost of a regular trials game for this.
I'm about to say some unpopular things, but I ask that you take a couple minutes and read them.
I'd never played a free to play or "freemium" game before Trials Frontier (with the exception of downloading one and realizing what it was). I'm also a huge Trials fan like all of you, so you can imagine my mixed emotions when I found out that Trials was going to be a F2P game. I had a couple friends who had access to the game before I did (me being on Android, them on iOS), and they complained about the F2P model and never really played the game much. Still, I LOVE Trials. I had to give it a shot.
When I first started playing the game lets you get through the first 8 or 9 levels without having to take a break, which is pretty cool. But then the waiting game starts, and then the grinding, and then some more waiting, and then, well, you get the idea. The mustard from my sandwich leaked out on to my bike while I was waiting for the town to bring in some more fuel.
Let stop for a minute and imagine that you are a game developer (I'm a software developer by trade, so I speak with some experience here). You spent long hours trying to make the best game you possibly could, and your boss comes up and tells you that your company is going to give away your game for free. I don't know about you, but I'd be #!$$ed right off. With all of the hard work you did, you were sure it could have been a big seller.
I know that isn't the exact thing that happened here, but this game IS FREE. Assuming you have a device that you can play it on, it didn't cost you a penny to download the game (unless you had to pay for your data). Now you are given the OPTION to NEVER PAY ANYTHING to play it. Forever. I don't know about you, but where I come from, almost nothing is free. It's pretty hard to argue that free isn't at least a fair price.
But what about the fuel meter, or the constant upgrades I have to grind for? Why can't I have all of the bikes at the start? I would totally pay up front to have all of these. Maybe you would, but guess what? Most people won't. Not when there are similar apps out there that cost nothing. Even if it seems like most people on this forum would pay, they aren't a good representation of the actual consumers out there. And how much would you pay? $5? There are some pretty decent titles out there for $5. You are not going to get people to commit a decent amount of money up front to a phone/tablet game because that's not the way things work anymore.
So back to the software developer. He knows that he can't sell his mobile game for $20. Heck, even at $5 people are going to pass and move on to the next thing (just google some articles on app pricing, and this becomes painfully apparent). So because making games is a business, they have to try to make the most they can from it, so they can make a living, and make even more games. This is where the F2P model comes in. You let someone play for awhile, and they can continue playing for awhile every so often, but if they want to play more then they'll throw you $5 or $10. That way the consumer has a choice after trying the game instead of investing up front. Aside from the advertising revenues, the developer is taking a risk releasing a free game, with the hope that people will contribute some money because they like it.
You can argue that there is just too much grinding in the game, and that's fine. We all have our own opinions on that. Maybe the system would work better if it was a F2P model, but once you spent $20 you unlocked the ability to play all of the time, or it required you to upgrade significantly less. I threw RL $20 dollars because I felt like it was worth it to increase my fuel tank size and I'm well on my way to collecting enough diamonds to upgrade again soon - I'll be able to play for several hours without needing to take a break which is more than enough for me. I am enjoying this game way more than Fusion.
I know not everyone is going to see things this way, and that's okay. I just wanted to shed some light on why things are the way they are.
Thanks for reading,
les
I totally understand where you are coming from and agree with a lot of it but the problem here is what your money actually gets you. Upgrading your tank barely does anything because once your gas is gone its still going to take an hour to get 20 more gallons which leaves you with a very minimal amount of time to play unless you spend more money on gems to refill or upgrade your tank.
I think the problem they made with this game is gouging you at every point. On top of being given limited playtime (unless you are open to constantly spending money) they have also added in huge delays, sometimes over a week, for upgrades, and ridiculous coin costs just to get to the timer started.
They could easily offer some relief to the hardcore players by offering something like a $20 fee for unlimited fuel, while still retaining the long upgrade waits and high coin prices which would still leave the door open for people to constantly make purchases to get around those.
The way they do things now they run the risk of getting people into the game only to give up once they get to the upper levels where everything costs way way way more to complete.
Les, I understand and respect your opinion. BUT there was a mobile game released on the same week that was in development for about 2 years. This game is NOT published by a highly popular company like Ubisoft, yet they were still respectful enough to make it a premium game.
The game was not hindered by Freemium garbage, and therefore the pure quality gameplay was being praised by everyone. Frontier, on the other hand, had very mixed reception. Mostly because of the exploitative nature of the game.
The game is Wayward Souls. It was voted app of the week, and it's thread is still top page of the forums active with praise and gameplay discussion.
Frontier's thread is pages down, and it was full of people proclaiming their disappointment for giving a trials game free to play elements.
