Anyone else have difficulty getting gold on this any tips would be appreciated

Learn the course, as there are LOADS of places you need to slow down and other places where you need to full throttle, it's vital to know where to do which. Play it through slowly and even just edge to the end of a ramp to see what's on the other side of it. Shouldn't take long to get gold if you know the course.

yeah i know when to slow down on certain parts i just dont have the skill to do it but i guess practice will make me better.

The best thing to do is to play some hard/extreme tracks, learn how to fully control the bike and what to do for each obstacle. It is also helpful to watch replays to see what other people do. You'll get the platinum in no time just takes a little dedication.

watch some replays of other riders.. no better tips than that
