    What's the purpose for layers?

I can't think for what layers work. There is a default "driving line" and "layer 001", but can't see any change.
In a drawing/photo editor I know that layers are for putting an object before/behind another object, but in a 3D world, for what would that be useful?

It's exactly for the same purpose as in photo editing. If you're making different variations of the track(I'm thinking about the cool track in evo which was different every time) you can use the layers to edit the variations. The layers are only for editing, so they cannot be modified dynamically, but unlike grouping and making things ghost objects (which is very messy), layers can be made completely hidden and locked into place so that even area selector cannot touch certain objects.

Oh, that's pretty nifty. But how can I make a new layer?

Open the layer tools in the radial menu by pressing dpad down and I guess it was on the top, I don't have the editor here right now. For the same reason I don't remember where it was in the layer tools but there should be add layer or something.

Sounds cool. I'd probably put my physics joints on a separate layer to make them easy to select when they're inside of other objects.

Is there an option to hide all logic tiles specifically, or do you have to remember to be on that specific layer when adding new logic tiles? I'm used to AutoCAD's layer system, where you can set certain object types to always show up on a certain layer, regardless of which layer you currently have active.

You can disable the logic tiles and connectors in the radial menu. You only can't hide the tile's text.

Yes the tiles can be quickly hidden via the radial menu, but obviously you can make a layer for the logic only to make it completely hidden and lock it to prevent deleting anything by mistake.
