Anyone remember Doom, one of the first FPS games that got really famous (shortly after Wolfenstein3d).
It's now over 20 years old since December 2013, feels like a long time. Yet I remember playing Wolf and Doom as a kid on a windows 3.1/DOS machine.
I got into editing a while ago, hadn't touched it for a while now, but there is still major development on GZdoom and GZdoombuilder, especially for features like Dynamic lights/OPENGL/3d floors and slopes. Pretty much as successors of Doombuilder 2 and Zdoom and others.
It's really a whole different thing then trials of course but the engine is still so robust, especially with all the modding going on.
I just use doom/doom2 features for now though.
Also with a supposed new Doom coming out (they announced beta access for pre ordered boxed versions of Wolfenstein New Order coming out later this year.
I didn't play Doom 3 much at all, as it just felt radically different and I hope the new Doom is going back to its roots, along with robust tools to edit things later on, if they add things like multiplayer/custom map support it can be a hit.

I played a TON of Doom 1, 2 and add ons. I even made a bunch of deathmatch levels and played against my brothers using the 3 computers networked in our house. Good times. I even played through Doom 3 several times (PC, Xbox, Xbox 360) and the additional missions and really enjoyed that too.
Needless to say, I'm extremely interested to see what the newest Doom game is all about. Hopefully it brings some incredible multiplayer to the table.
EDIT: I also played through Doom: Resurrection on iOS and loved it too! I'm a Doom fanboy...
If you're a Doom fanboy, PLAY THE PC GAMEPLAY MOD BRUTAL DOOM! This ****s all over most modern FPS, and it's based on a game from 1993! Doom doesn't hold up too well these days vanilla, except in it's puzzling level design, even back in the day I couldn't play Doom for hours on end due to boredom despite it's generally excellent design for the time, but with Brutal Doom it's pure FPS awesomeness. Pure gameplay.
As for the engine and editing tools, despite extensive improvements due to sourceports etc, it's still all a bit primitive compared to modern engines. You cannot even pan textures on the floor and ceiling, for example, but it's Doom so hey, mod away!
Also, Pre-order Wolfenstein: The New Order (which looks pretty good) and get access to the Doom 4 beta.

With W:TNO they appear to have gone back to the better FPS design: secrets, level design that requires using your brain, puzzles, no damn regen health and so on. I'm still cautious about the level design though because of modern standards i.e this:

Just today I found the game GUN GODZ by Vlambeer, it's free and it's great.

Same here used to play Doom, Hexen, Heretic etc etc all the time. I blame them for me getting into networking

In combination with Doom's tricky level design and general awesomeness.
Basically it adds more gameplay depth and improves the experience all round. I have been enjoying it so much more than most modern shooters.
