Re: PS4 to offer backwards compatibility
Not defensive, just amused.
Edit: Also, both companies have said that cloud and gaikai would probably not work in Europe due to internaet/broadband issues. So the fact that Sony are now doing a 180 on this is good news. For xb1, PS4, whatever. It means its being investigated and probably implemented by Sony. MS are very unlikely to give them that kind of advantage without any attempt at making cloud work in Europe.
I just hope it all works out, as it would lead to other options via gaikai and cloud as well.

Re: PS4 to offer backwards compatibility
I am wondering what kind of latency issues will be encountered by the majority of users. Hopefully they have it all figured out, but that is also likely the reason for their closed service beta.

Re: PS4 to offer backwards compatibility
As I mentioned, the idea was previously rejected by Sony and MS due to European broadband (the irony of which, I'm sure you understand Shifty, having seen our speedtests!). The info from Sony EUROPE regarding when it will be available there, is a little less optimistic....

Which relates to your latency thoughts to some extent...
