Your thread title is misleading. Backwards compatible means that the system will play the software that you already have, on disc, in the new machine or download the same software as on the previous console to be played. Using this streaming service is not the same as putting a PS1/2/3 disc into the drive, which is what backwards compatibility is. This is a game streaming service.

Is it cool? Yes, but it is NOT backwards compatibility.

Edit: I am also looking forward to seeing what their pricing structure is, as it looks like games cannot "purchased" so much as rented for the amount of time that you are a Playstation Now subscriber.

It's like saying my TV is backwards compatible with VHS-only tapes because some of the movies are available on Netflix. It's not backwards compatibility, but it sounds really cool.

Yeah but it's Barry...this wasn't a proclamation of what PS4 can do, more a veiled dig at what XB1 can't

Shouldn't XB1 be capable of somthings similar if they decide to implement it?

I would be surprised if MS doesn't come up with a similar service now.

Xbox One could potentially offer backwards compatibility thanks to the power of the cloud.

That’s according to Xbox's senior director of product planning and management Albert Penello, who told GameSpot that the Xbox One could offer access to previous-gen games, in a similar manner to the proposed Gaikai service on PS4.

Responding to an enquiry on the matter, Penello said "Yeah, absolutely. That's one of the things that makes [the cloud] at the same time both totally interesting and hard to describe to people."

"There are so many things that the servers can do. Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it's things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience."

I had no idea they were going to offer the service to other devices this is a very bold move by Sony. Really surprised...they really mean business this generation.

So funny how any xbox threads just have xbox discussion, but start a PS4 thread and all the info is about XB1 instead.......and I'M the one who gets called a fanboy, despite owning both consoles!

I found 2 threads here about the Xbox One, and both of them have PS4 discussion in them. And all anyone mentioned in this thread is that people wondered if MS could do something similar (me) and that MS has talked about doing basically the same thing as Playstation Now is going to do (Willyumz). It's not like anyone is bashing the PS4, so I don't understand why you are so defensive.
