I'm pretty sure the snap tool is broken of some sort.. That might not be true but if it does work fine then I know it works very confusingly...

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't it's confusing indeed.

But basically, make sure that 2 out of 3 axis are the same, so make your drive line, assign one data verification tool (in triggers and events, it's the last one in the sub-section 'data') to the starting marker (not the checkpoint) and one to the end, so that you can know their co-ordinates. Then, make 2 out of 3 the same, I usually go with 'x' and 'y'.

Once they're the same, go to the start menu, select editor options, and you'll see 'x', 'y' and 'z', I select all of them. Then, below that, there will be a grid tool, select that, then assign it to the object that you want to snap. Then, simply copy the object and move it roughly around where you want to snap it and push in the right controller stick, and it should work.

    Happy snapping

    Note:

    - if you de-select 'x', 'y' and 'z' it will move the object directly to the centre of the driving line.

    - the snap tool doesn't work so well with curved objects.

    - I usually always have the distance from the object, I forgot what it's called, I haven't been in the editor for a while, to...0.50 metres.

snap plane works fine it just isn't easy to use nor can it ever be on console without sacrificing utility

you got 3 mayor uses for the snap plane
    -snap to driveline(x,y,z are off)
    -snap to global grid
-snap to local grid(you placed a grid in a local object)

these settings have to be changed in the editor menu
you also have a distance setting for the local and global grid(you have to guess the correct distances)
a tip for the distance, u can use a very small snap distance for minor fine tuning and a bigger one for general placement

driveline snapping doesn't need explaining i guess

    snapping to a grid
basicly the world is just filled with points and between each you have the distance from the settings menu
now if you click right stick the object will move to the closest point( a second click will make it change it to the "default" angle of the object)

for local the same except it can have a different orrientation etc
(if you disable x,y,z or a combination of those instead of a point it will snap to a line or point, but all or nothing is all you really need to know)

if you use the local or global grid, make sure to work with only 1 object at a time and stick with it till its done because if you start moving or snapping multiple objects it will be all messed up so be carefull( a group of objects will snap to a different point than 1 object )

Re: How do I align objects to be perfect?

I never found the snap tool very useful. I usually place the object manually, and then to verify that it is aligned with the driving line, I move it to the background and then click R3 once like previously mentioned.

Fine tuning angles can be a pain in the editor with the triggers, but it works out. I just zoom in and try to align as good as I can and then adjust if I get wheel bounce during testing.
