Just played the Xbox One and Killer Instinct at the MS store

I played Killer Instinct on the Xbox One at my local Microsoft store. Here are my impressions:

Controller - Overall, I like this controller much more than the 360's controller. The thumbsticks have a smaller surface area and felt more solid overall. The D-pad is another huge improvement and pressing up, down, left and right are distinguished. This will help tremendously with games like Gears of War, where different directions select different weapons. Diagonals on the D pad were a little tricky but after some practice, I could pull off endokukens and wind kicks with relative ease. The triggers and face buttons felt good and responsive but I had the same issue with the shoulder buttons that a lot of others have reported: they don't work when pressed closer to the middle of the controller. I have long fingers and had to make a conscious effort to press them correctly. The good news is that I got used to them after a couple of matches and it wasn't as bad then. Still, I did run into a small problem with them initially.

KI Visuals - I'm not going to lie. The game looked great in person. 60 fps and native 720p has set the graphics bar in fighting games. The detail in the character models and backgrounds has no equal in the area of fighting games and the particle effects always put a smile on my face. One negative thing I can say is that I saw some pretty ugly jaggies on the character select screen (the only time I had the opportunity to stop and look at things closely) because the game is only running at 720p. Thankfully, the game is so fast-paced and crazy that it's near impossible to notice these things while playing and it will most certainly look better on my TV at home.

KI Gameplay - I got whooped by the CPU a couple of times while I was learning the flow of the game (watching videos can only help so much). However, I was able to pull off some nice combos. I did an "insane" 17 hit combo and even did a double ultra. My double ultra combo was a little gimped though and kind of funny. I instinct-cancelled during the ultra ender, then hit a few more times, went back into ultra and finished the ender. Got 33 hits and heard the hype "UUULLLTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" Good times. The people before and after I played were only interested in Forza 5...

D2 has very fond memories playing KI and KI Gold on the snes and n64. Have seen vidoes and all the things you pointed out seemed evident (particularly the particle effects).

Am pleased to hear about the d-pad at least responding how it should to individual presses. May I ask how it rolls from one direction to the other, is it smooth? This will be key for fighters - not having a d-pad that fights your movements.

Well, every direction has a distinct "click" when pressed so you know for certain what and when you pressed it. This I really like. The problem is that diagonals didn't seem to want to register at first. I think the "rolling" motions for fireballs and such were easier on the older SNES and N64 controllers but after a couple of matches, I could pull them off consistently. Of course, you could also just use the analog stick, which is better than the 360's because it has a less distance to travel from one end to the other and generally feels more solid. I can see KI players becoming very skilled using either one of these options and can't wait for the 22nd!

Gears actually uses "Y" to change weapons not the D-pad.

If you're talking about Judgment, yes you're right. The first 3 Gears games use the D pad to switch between lancer, gnasher, snub and grenade.

Or hammerburst also, but none of these games will be on Next gen.

thanks for the response. guess i'll just have to wait and see. last decent d-pad on a console was on the Sega Saturn....since then it seems that manufacturers have forgotten how to make a proper d-pad.

Hi did you notice any force feedback from the triggers that has been claimed? Or did the game not support this function?
