To cover all of your concerns, but most specifically Shifty's, I present Gabe Newell's response on the matter:

Valve are rediculously overrated as game developers imo. I only enjoyed their first game, Half-Life. They are better on the tech and business side than design side imo.

Valve's new controller draws inspiration from my childhood:

Ugliest gamepad ever seen. I'd rather use the PS3 Boomerang.

Check out the specs of Steambox, really outrageous!

    Steam Machine specs

GPU: some units with Nvidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660

CPU: some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3

    RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)

    Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD

Power supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold

    Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high
Every component is more powerful than PS4 and XB1, and also customizable. (But I don't care that stuff, I want gameplay & story powerful games!)

OS: Customized Linux Blend... not so well known for gaming....

Now... Fast forward 7 years from now and try to play assassins creed 12. Try it on this machine with these "superior specs" and then try it on the PS4. With this up-gradable PC you will be sliding those detail settings to medium, unless you want to spend a couple hundred to upgrade the system. Try it on your console and you get the full experience that the developers create for that system.

I cringe when I see people say they want an up-gradable console. It completely ruins what is great about consoles. The developers are creating the game for one target on a console, they can optimize completely for the system. Its why PS3 and 360 games are so close graphically to PC games while their specs are MILES behind...

If I spend hundreds of dollars on a system and find out I cant play full detail on every game, I would totally freak out.

Those detail settings at medium will likely still look better than PS4 and Xbox One though down the track, will probably run at higher res with better frame rates too.

I agree that an upgradable console kind of defeats the purpose, but this to me targets an audience between the console gamer and hardcore pc enthusiast. Casual console users wont want to deal with upgrades and PC elites wont want to touch it when they can build they own rig and make it more beastly.

I totally agree with you. Steam was only for PC, and now Valve makes a videogame console for hardcore PC gamers, and PC gaming was never that casual than console gaming, so, it would be senseless making a casual console off the popular PC game client. Gaming PCs were never cheap, and richer people have their money to upgrade their machine, and that's why they stay on that platform.
