It could be that the Xbox One was designed to allow it to run quietly and cooler than the Xbox 360 at launch. The large shell is most likely designed for efficient ventilation. Of course this is all just speculation but I'd be more concerned about the PS4 overheating with the smaller form factor and the power supply built in, not to mention faster RAM.

I suspect thats the exact reason for the XB1's size. However we know from the FCC testing that the PS4 will operate between 5 and 35 degrees compared to the PS3 which was from 45-55 degrees. So I have no concerns about that at all. However, the XB1 also has a "backup" system in case the cooling isnt sufficient which reduces the amount of power the XB1 draws in order to prevent overheating. Wether this could effect gameplay, processing speeds or anything else would be pure guesswork on my part.

Nothing wrong with XB1 having a backup in case things get too hot. That shows me that they're doing everything they can to prevent another repeat of the RRoD fiasco. With FCC testing, did they actually play games or put the console under any sort of stress? If not, that would not be a very accurate measurement of temperature.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not suggesting either is better, simply trying to state that the cooling systems on both have been mentioned and appear to be better than this gen. PS4 runs cooler, XB1 has a failsafe (no idea if that runs cooler as well). My main point is that the PS4 may be small but still cools effectively and the XB1 is big to cool effectively and has a failsafe. So hopefully we wont see a reoccurence of the YLOD or RROD due to overheating like with PS3 and 360!

Well said. I think both companies really took it up a notch and I don't expect there to be widespread overheating problems with either. I was just expressing more concern over the PS4 because of the smaller form factor and faster hardware. I suppose we'll all find out how these bad boys operate under stress in 2.5 months!

I liekwise had concerns about the XB1 as it apparently requires so much space for cooling, I wondered wether it would do it efficiently or not! lol

As I've said recently (to you I believe! lol), I really want to see two great consoles. This drives the consoles forward, encourages first party developers to push exclusives to try and gain an advantage and that in turns pushes third party developers to try and keep up. All of which benefits me and you, even though we'll be on different consoles, because it benefits all gamers. Happy days! lol

I don't care about the system specs in the PS4/XBone, since they won't take advantage of the new consoles power till about 5 years from now. Just like the current gen of consoles (ex. Oblivion > Skyrim)

I'm not a console fanboy, I'm a online service fanboy!
What I am far more concerned about is the online services of each.
I hope & pray Sony is going to rip-off Xbox LIVE, because PSN on PS3 was/is a absolute joke in comparison to Xbox LIVE on the 360... Yeah! I want a underscore/hyphen in my PSN name, that looks SICK!!!

Barry, I've just popped up a question about the PS4 temperature, that 5 -35 degree celsius is can't be true by the stater.

The normal room temperature (without winter) is from 25 - 35°C, while you say that PS4 is running at 5- 35°C? No device gets so cold like a refrigerator, and it is always hotter than the room temperature even with fans. Like a smartphone, which produces almost no heat, still hotter than room temperature, so I don't believe that guy who stated the 5-35°C on PS4.

You're right, the FCC must have got it wrong. Thats a **** response, sorry......

    Edit:
Presumably the operating temperature of electronics are tested in a "neutral" environment. So the console's operating temperature ALONE means that it wouldnt go above those temps. However, the room may effect it. So if the room is 25degrees, the console should be able to maintain close to that temperature as opposed to getting extremely hot and adding to the room temp. In other words, unless you stick it in a suana, it should be able to regulate its temperature to stay within those boundaries and without significantly adding to the temp of the room or running the risk of overheating.
