If you're certain that the computer turns on but nothing appears on the screen, maybe it's just the display that has gone out. If you can, try to connect it to an external display like an HDTV to see if you can get anything. You still may be able to salvage anything you were working on without paying big bucks.

Edit: Oops. I somehow missed how he mentioned that he already tried plugging it into the TV.

I have tried plugging it into my TV through the HDMI to see if it was a screen issue. The TV basically shows that it has something plugged in but it still shows a blank screen.

If you can, try to connect it to an external display like an HDTV to see if you can get anything.

I really wish I could help. I'm having a lifetimes worth of system fault issues right now on my dads PC.

Here's what I suggest if you haven't done this already, as it usually helps me a lot.

Locate the actual model number for your laptop and google "dell [model #] blank screen on boot" or something to that effect.

Then you pore through a few pages of other people (hopefully) describing your exact issue and read the recommended solutions presented by that specific community.

Just about every time I do this with a problem, google's auto complete fills in the data or guesses a better path that matches my problem exactly.

My guess is the integrated video card in your laptop has gone out. I've had this issue on 2 previous computers. Now I always try to go with an actual physical graphics card. Kinda hard in a laptop if they didn't design it to fit one in there.
