Trials Evolution GOLD seems to be a nightmare.

Before I begin, I'd like to say that I have both Trials versions on 360 and have never had one single problem. I've played the hell out of both of them, and have always managed to load the game and find players.
I've had Trials Gold since it was first available, and at first things seem to be ok. The game would actually load and I could (patiently) sit and wait for a multiplayer game.
Ever since an update which was a month + back, the game is massively unstable. Most recently (today) the game loads through Uplay, the music begins and I see an initial loading screen, then the music fades out and I get a black screen. I then need to close the game.
This has happened three times today, but on the fourth attempt it actually loaded the menu. I then picked multiplayer but it wasn't connected to the servers for some reason.
Previous to the new 'black screen', the game would load and I could slowly get access to a multiplayer game, but it would then decided to throw me back to the desktop with uplay reporting an error. This error would happen on most occasions at the end of a round, just as the leaderboard was about to be displayed.
Is anyone else out there having issues along these lines?. My PC has had the same spec the entire time of owning this game, and has more than enough resources to handle Trials Gold.
I'm now on the verge of actually going down the route of gaining a refund, which is the first time I have ever done this for a game. I would just like to play some Trials at my PC without the need of the 360 and paying for XBOX Live, but this GOLD versions seems to be horrendous.
Well, it's either the game itself or Uplay, its impossible to tell.
