    Re: Greenhearts Answer to Piracy!

The thing is, crack is an illegal substance (unless prescribed and even then highly controlled) and a piece of software released by the rightholder is not. I'm not pro-piracy but what they did with the game reeks of hypocrisy and falsified statistics. Might go as far as to call the stats manufactured since that's effectively what they achieved by releasing the cracked version.

A sting operation is a sting operation. Nobody buying crack from the cops is going to end up with it.

I would actually say that the opposite is true, in that their stats were made up of only the number of people playing the versions that they intentionally leaked, and not versions that were cracked by other groups. The point seems to be to show that piracy sucks, and to troll pirates, which they succeeded in.

That's exactly what I meant and why I called it hypocritical and manufactured.

I think you may have missed the point of this exercise. It's not that they people who downloaded the game didn't "commit a crime", it's that they thought they were, and did it anyways.

We could also say that the developer lured them into it, could we not?
It's not that I don't get their message, I really do. But their jab at piracy is so overshadowed by the hypocracy of their methods that I think the message loses it's meaning. There are good ways of making a statement and then there are publicity stunts like this. You don't have to agree with me but this is how this ordeal feels to me.

how did the developers lure them in?
all they did was put a version up sooner than there would have been

this way they could release a cracked slightly tweaked version where ingame the pirates would go bankrupt because of pirates, those pirates even asked on their forums if they could develop anti pirate software like the unpopular always on drm

i think they did an awesome job at making their point, not sure what you think would have been a better way
i think because the point was so good is that it got so much publicity

I'd love to know the intentions of certain political figures, can you hook me up with your magical gift of mind-reading?

This doesn't mean anything. These are the same people who take ladders out of their swimming pools in The Sims and make parks without exits in Roller Coaster Tycoon because it's a game and nothing really matters.

Seriously? They downloaded a cracked version of the game. They didn't pay for it. I think that makes their intentions pretty clear, sir.

They didn't know that the version they were downloading was a "Special Edition", they thought they were getting the full game. For free. Which is why they downloaded it. Without paying for it.
