Both are important.
Although bad atmosphere/decoration is far more forgiving than bad driving line.
Bet that everyone would 5 star something with just atmosphere before a track with floating ramps. So my opinion is atmosphere is the deciding factor of a perfect track. (Except ninja players. I've seen them give 5 stars to a couple blocks of wood... You weirdos) My vote went to atmosphere. I'll accept a sucky driving line while rest sucks me into a story or something going on. Except for those unlined up materials that catches the bike off gaurd and throws you on your face.. £*cking hate that.
Here's my take on it, and I guess it might sound a little weird. First, I think a track needs both to truly be excellent. However, when comparing the two aspects separately, my thoughts get odd. A good driveline is more important than good scenery, but, if I see a track that is just a good driveline, as opposed to a track that just has good scenery, I'll probably have much more of an appreciation for the one with scenery. I assume I feel this way because there's kind of a definitive logic to a good driveline, if an obstacle doesn't feel right, most people just know. However with scenery, it's so open. You can create anything. That infinite possibility has the potential to really blow people's minds.
So yeah, maybe what I said makes some sense to someone![]()
Driving line for me, you can make a classic track with a great driving line and very little scenery...take trials hd as the gospel there...but you could never make a classic track with an awful driving line and amazing scenery. I aim for both when I build..but when I play if the driving line isnt good I wont get far enough to see the scenery.
Depends what you mean by a classic track. About a year ago a track called Terminator 2 got a RL pick. The scenery was amazing but the DL and camera were awful. Don't get me wrong I hated the track, but I've never seen a track with a great line and no scenery get a pick, but I have seen it the other way around.Originally Posted by emcee
Agreed. My Space Odyssey tracks were really popular and I still get messages and FR's for them and those DLs were pretty darn bad. My son was playing HD the other day and I wanted to play some of my old tracks and I remembered just how bad a lot of the DLs were, lol. I think it goes back to what I said earlier.Originally Posted by JaminBen007
Yeah I know what you mean...but thats just my opinion mate...I could never call a track a classic if the DL sucked, others will though, as crowsbeak pointed out. Trials hd had much better tracks IMO..and the backgrounds were almost bare and very similar too. Evo has much better scenery but far fewer killer DLs.Originally Posted by JaminBen007
Just my personal preference.
I think I would agree with that too. HD had some really addicting tracks. Technique, groundhog, boxes. I haven't been addicted to any tracks in evo like I was on some of HD's. Not yet, anyway. I haven't tried to really platinum everything in evo and I didn't get addicted to the lines in HD until I was trying to improve dramatically on the leaderboards. So maybe I will feel differently about evos lines when I do.
