I was more or less trying to defend the use of online passes. Sorry if that wasn't clear. And tbh I have never had a game disc wear out on me, so I was not aware that was an issue. ( I realize early 360 models killed many discs, but I consider that a hardware issue, not usual wear and tear on the disc.)
I hear you Stego. What I mean is disks get wear and from normal use no matter how much you look after them. They essentially get cooked to a certain degree each time time you use them-especially inside earlier consoles where they feel like they've come out of a clothes dryer.

Disks also don't last forever and their age is shortened depending on how well you or the previous owner looked after them. This includes factors from the temperature conditions of where they are stored to whether little kids are handling them etc.

People like you and I look after our stuff, but a lot of people don't and they are often the people trading in games. This can often result in the retailer having to restore the condition of the disk by either cleaning or shaving a layer from the surface of the disk.
