    The 2nd hand gaming market

I Hope im not quoting out of context here but upon reading another post i came across this >

It would just take too much work to get too many people on the same page.
Personally I dont understand why developers/MS/Sony etc are so bothered about this as there not loosing out on any profit at all?

Take BF3, if I buy the hard copy of this, play it and then re-sell it at a loss to a friend - then surely they are the only person that can "still" play it as i dont own a copy anymore?

Breakdown - (for example say im the only person who plays the game online (amount of users on server=0)

I purchase BF3 (one more person added to the servers = 1)
I stop playing it (one person removed from the servers = 0)
I sell it to a friend (one more person added to the servers =1)

Nothing changes apart from the physical person playing the game is different? Am i missing something, if so can someone fill me in.

The 2nd hand game market for me is a way of testing games that ive never played before, if i like them it opens up the legacy issue as im more than likely to trust the next in the series, without the chance to do this i will rarely buy brand new games anymore.

    What am i missing ???

Game companies are going bust and want to try and increase their profits by elimating the second hand market. Buy new or dont buy. They figure the only "sales" they lose are sales they get no money from, the used market. Eliminating that market may lead to an increase in new sales and help them make more money and stay afloat. Unless your a larger company of course, then you just make even more money to make more games/profit.

    That about sum it up?

It won't even be an issue soon. Music is almost exclusively download only, and movies arn't far behind. With the next gen consoles video games will follow shortly after.

Downloading game demos will be how we decide which to buy and which not, which for some of use has been the norm for a while.

If thats the case, then here's hoping the next xbox gets a MASSIVE increase in HDD size. Going to have to be over 500gb to be any use as our "multimedia centre" like they keep telling us it will be. Closer to 1000gb really.

Either way, I'm really growing tired of seeing AAA publishers do any and everything they possibly can just to flip a profit of some sort. If they attempt to have always-on DRM on the next-gen Xbox and refuse to let you play used games, I wont buy it.

They constantly make tons of money from games, they dont need to do this, they just want control of their market. I say no no!

Going on previous experience of Microsoft, hard disk storage will be limited and online storage in the cloud will be sold at a premium. Probably on renewable monthly or annual rates.

Say it isnt so! That would suck, given MS' history of poor servers, I wouldnt want to have to rely on cloud to be able to access a game.

Ok. It isn't so. I'm only hypothesising. It just seems like the only logical solution.

On the flip side, if they do offer online storage, the price of the consoles should come down significantly.

The current price difference in types of Xbox relate only to their hard disk size, they all have the same performance (excluding built in Bluetooth of course).

Online storage eliminates this aspect, so it might not be all doom and gloom.

I am growing tired of the gaming industry as a whole. Always online DRM crap, day one DLC, online passes, motion controls, touch screen controls, huge focus on multiplayer, microtransactions, ect. It is all driving me away from one of my favorite passtimes. I honestly dont see myself playing videogames anymore in the near future, except for the occasional nes or snes emulator.

    +1

All of the trends the industry are adopting now really make me unenthusiastic towards the future of games. If Microsoft really tries to pull this off, I hope it falls right back on them and forces a change.

Im lookin for more developers to take use of tools like Kickstarter or something, instead of funding from a company like EA/Activision..
