Have any of you guys played Bioshock Infinite yet? I enjoyed the first game, but got kind of bored with it and kept putting it down, so it took me a couple of months to beat. From what I've played of Infinite, I'm extremely impressed so far. The story is great, and it's got some of the most awesome environments I've ever seen.
*Ok, very mild spoilers ahead*
I have kind of been missing the suspenseful atmosphere from the first game, though. I'd been going through this whole game thinking it wasn't that scary, and then like 10 hours into the game, this CRAZY jump scare just comes out of nowhere! It's not really the cheap "Boo!" kind of jump scare, either. The game sets it up so perfectly, making you sneak past these enemies and keep a distance from them, and just when you think you're in the clear and you've almost forgotten about them, you turn around and BAM! One of them is standing there breathing right down your neck.
I don't normally scare this easily, but with basically the whole game setting me up for this moment, I literally jumped out of my chair, dropped my mouse on the floor, and nearly flipped my laptop off the desk, lol. I thought the surgeon scene in Bioshock 1 was bad, but OMG, I really didn't see this coming at all!
Anyway, I accidentally alt-tabbed out of the game during that part, so I thought since I've got the game minimized I'll come here to calm my nerves after nearly having a heart attack, lol. It's a really fantastic game, and has a good chance of being my GOTY. You should all play it, even if you're like me and don't normally play first person shooters.
I really want to play this game. The environment and story look fascinating to me. I hope I can pick this game up soon.
After playing Assassin's Creed III, and feeling kind of let down by the story and setting, it kind of put me off from picking up this game, because it's got sort that similar sort of "Americana" vibe to it. I'm really glad I ended up getting it, though, because their take on alternate history in this game is so incredibly fascinating, it's really hard to put down. I'm hoping to finish it tonight in a single play-through.Originally Posted by LukeMSki
Loved the first 2 but I'll hold off for a bit, maybe wait a few patches and DLC until they fixed the stutters that occur here and there.
Though part of it seems to be very high VRAM-requirement of uncompressed textures they included on PC - some people report hitting up to 2.8GB (which doesn't bother me since I have 6 *ahem*).
Disabling background level streaming via .ini seems to remedy the stutters somewhat, but breaks the game (NPCs disappearing, areas not accessible).
System Shock 2 < System Shock <<< Bioshock < Bioshock: Infinite < Bioshock 2
People who rate Bioshock (any) highly are clueless, even if the high scores are just for the plot/storytelling.
The first and second lines of your post seem to contradict each other. Did you mean to use "greater than" symbols?Originally Posted by apdenton1
Brain fart, yes I meant to use greater than symbols.Originally Posted by nannerdw
And it may be an opinion but it's an opinion that has weight.
It's ok, you all continue to scream GOTY as usual. Compared to most other modern games Bioshock IS worth screaming about.
Never played the System Shock series, but it's on my backlog. I've heard great things about it.
Good. I recommend starting with 2. 1 is brilliant but it's from 1994, so the controls (no mouselook without a specific mod) are a real challenge to get used to. 1 is still definitely worth looking into though, it's incredible, the developers were absolute geniuses.Originally Posted by nannerdw
But they knew they had to simplify everything with Bioshock for success in this backward industry
If only it were Looking Glass who dominated the industry (they published their own games too for a while), and not EA, Valve, Activision etc.
But there is the simple fact that taking a known name (FIFA, James Bond, Disney IP x or whatever) and making a quick game about it will achieve greater sales than that of the hard work, passion and intelligence put into something like the System Shock series.
