    Gears of War: Judgement

Who is getting this on day one? I'm quite skeptical. Then again, what else to buy with $60?

My $60 is going to The Last of Us. I will get the new Gears once the price goes down a bit.

But I am not skeptical about the game at all. Gears 3 was a vast improvement over the others. I find it hard to believe they would take a step backwards.

    Re: Gears of War: Judgement

I wrote up some extensive impressions on another forum:

Alright, so the game comes out this coming Tuesday but if you pre-ordered the game at GameStop, you get early access to Overrun mode. The best part is that you get to keep all the experience you gain when you get the retail version.

I played it quite a bit last night and almost reached level 7 in one sitting. I've played an insane amount of Gears 3 and it continues to be one of my favorite online shooters. Here are my impressions of the demo:

    - Switching between weapons is MUCH faster. It doesn't take nearly as long as it does in other games. Part of this is due to the fact that the animation for switching is much faster and another reason is that you can only carry 2 weapons at once and switching between them is done by pressing the Y button (instead of selecting the weapon with the D pad). Being limited to 2 weapons means you no longer carry a snub pistol like in every other Gears game.

    - The colors are much brighter and vibrant. This is probably because I the game takes place a mere 30 days after E-day and the world is a much better looking place than how it will end up looking by Gears 3.

    - Revving up the chainsaw now takes a bit longer. This makes it incredibly difficult to get the jump on people like I did in Gears 3. I suspect this change is the result of gnasher-users complaining like little babies that they got killed by another gun than their personal favorite. This kind of sucks because I used the chainsaw quite effectively in Gears 3 multiplayer.

    - The demo itself is pretty limited. Not only can you only play overrun mode, but it is only on one map: Skyline. The matches themselves are long and drawn-out and by the end of it, I find myself no longer caring who wins. I just want the match to end. I'll be honest; to me, overrun sounded like multiplayer gold on paper but I just couldn't get into it. I'm not a huge fan of class-based team play and that's basically all this is. When the engineer (Baird) puts down a turret, it's ridiculously powerful but just vanishes after like 15 seconds. It just looks silly.

    - Grenades are different. I'm not sure if I like them better or not. You can no longer plant them on surfaces like you could in Gears 2 and 3 but you can do a quick overhand throw. The best part is, if the grenade hits someone, it sticks to them like a plasma grenade in Halo.

    - I like the ability to drop down to lower areas instead of being held back by some invisible wall. It really opens up the map and adds another tactical angle to approach the fight.

Summary: overrun isn't as fun as I thought it would be but there are some interesting gameplay changes that will keep things fresh. I look forward to the retail release.

Well, Judgement is a prequel to the whole GoW trilogy so technically, it's not #4. There's also no horde mode as there is in part 2 and 3.
