I'd like to see basic knowledge of 3d modeling software become as common and widespread as typing up a document in Word, but I think it's more likely that some company like Apple or Amazon would start offering paid downloads of printable parts from different companies, onto a locked-down, DRM-laden 3d printer. Imagine the rage that would ensue, though, when someone's part didn't print off correctly and they were forced to pay again to re-print it. Maybe the machine could have built-in tolerance checking to avoid this, but I'm sure the end-user would still have to sign an agreement that says "We can't be held liable for any faulty parts."
One thing after few test. Atm its really not "easy" straight away. You have to calibrate the printer and learn what size comes out good. Also the plastic may get stuck or twist if your not careful what you print and how. SO they are not yet for mass markets but i can easily see 3d printing coming big in following years. Atm it feels like end os70's when maybe they printed first prints at home and it was slow etc.
So it feels bit like:

But it will be big!
Talking about 3D printing I can say that this is the best innovation for now. Because it opens wider opportunities to all of us. Now 3D printing is maybe costing too much, but in the future, after about 3-4 years when this thing will be available for everyone I think people will no go to fix theirs broken things but they will create another one.
The side that everyone can use different material to print model shows us that it is really universal thing. If we now can create real guns just from *weapons 3D model, that some time ago was 2D model.. to cookies to eat for a Christmas..or clothes for fashion shows..*or even now it is 3D printing pen ! What`s next ?
Also, I am going to buy simple 4 Point Curved Shuriken and print it because I am preparing a presentation about the 3D printing benefits on cold weapons sphere and want to have just for real example. I want to show that everyone could have their own created weapon so simply and by this actually it could grow insecurity level. So we all have to think how we can use newest innovations in the best ways !

Printing gun and parts... that's more like "story" now. Yep you can do it but time/effort you have to out there is huge.
BUt how about competition?
This would be just my personal competition..
example
1) Build device that you can do with simple parts like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9cK_TMLvjI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzW0--FMbVg
2) Film it with Trials in bg somehow so we can see its "new"
3) about 3 weeks time
4) Most awesome device wins custom 3d printed object. (some limitations obiously on size)
Hows that?
Just in case anyone is interested, I attended a lecture @ the LSE that had this topic in it .. it was called "Digital Reality - Life in Two Worlds: The Physical World We Inhabit and the Digital Universe We Create" You can download the recording free here >

The guest speaker " Mrs Ping Fu " the CEO of Geomagic, is a computer scientist and Internet pioneer and has played a major part in the implementation on 3D Printing over the years. She was actually wearing some funky pink high heels that she had made using the 3D printer >

She helped create the worlds 1st web browser " Mosaic " when she work at NCSA, She also worked on the film Terminator 2, developing the robot villain's signature trick, melting into liquid metal and then morphing into a new shape & is now a adviser to President Barack Obama on innovation (Not bad for someone who was born in Mao's cultural revolution!!) What a woman![]()
Also, 3D printing has also make its mark in a rather usual way .... Tissue engineering. They are developing printers to actually make new chemical compounds & biological structures and believe that it could revolutionize medicine is remote areas as people will just be able to print what they need there and then![]()
Don't you just love Science![]()
Yeah you can do anything with 3D printerhttp://www.sciencenews.org/view/gene..._of_mans_skull
Can you print me another head Anba?
Totally coincidence, but i came across this on the bbc website today
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21754915
The mind boggles as to what people will use these for![]()
& thanks for the link mutetus, very interesting! - I just finished watching a program about brain surgery where the surgeons had to break and then re-construct the skull of a 3yo girl (Totally mind blowing btw)
Sounds great.Originally Posted by ANBA
