My idea is that you can not only choose a rival from the leader board who's time you want to beat but also to get a massage saying you have beaten them and by how much. In addition, you have stats telling you how many people have chosen your time as the one to beat. this could be anonymous or public if you are challenging a friend but that person would still get a statistic of how many set them as a target and tried to beat their time......maybe even a percentage of people who achieved it or failed also.
How often do you set your sights on someone in the leader board and think " I can beat that....but not that! "
Having a target is helpful when setting a time as it pushes you as I'm sure all who care would agree.

Two minor issues. This is kinda the wrong forum.
There's actually a thread already that people are using to make suggestions for what they would want in the next Trials game.
