Re: Could this be the game changer Xbox needs?
I'm guessing not.
These new devices are all well and good but they're still in their infancy and are nowhere near responsive or stable enough to be used at a high end for real immersion. In short they are gimmicks, parlour tricks, if you will. Give them time and money and they'll get there but it will only augment the experience as we know it now or separate itself and become something else entirely it will never replace it.
Kinect is amusing but nothing more. The potential it holds is huge but nobody has tapped that yet. They make games for children or women because the level of control we male gamers (apologise for assuming I'm talking mainly to males), the core market, demand is beyond what they are capable of delivering. They are fun for 10 minutes but you wouldn't want to immerse yourself for hours at a time in that experience like you do with regular games.
My typical experience is that it is tiring and frustrating. I was looking forward to Child Of Eden but only played it for a couple of hours with Kinect. It loses it's soul without a controller as you don't feel the beat of the music that you're supposed to flow with. You could stick a controller in your pocket or waistband but that just seems a bit wrong! I smashed the doors off that game with a controller, the way it should be played, but to this day cannot stomach playing it with Kinect. The motion for the smart bomb makes the camera jerk hugely in the direction your hands are pointing!?! Why would they do that?
It is possible that these sorts of technology will become more prevalent in our gaming lives but only as an add-on or an enhancement. When they are truly capable of turning their ideas into fully realised and fully functioning entertainment devices they will branch out on their own and that, my friends, is the future right there. Like in Judge Dredd with Sandra Bullock!
It is possible that traditional video games with a controller will die out in mainstream culture and become a cult retro thing that only the truly hardcore are willing to suffer for their hit of pure gaming thrills. Possible but who am I to say? I cannot predict the future but it's like SkyNet in a way. If they master that domain that Judge Dredd future is the one our childrens children will be living in.
