Yeah I haven't played it before either but apparently you do really need to play the previous ones. I found the co-op demo fun but not at all scary which was a bit disappointing.

    I'm downloading it right now.

From everything I've heard they are trying their hardest to ruin the franchise. You wouldn't understand since you haven't played the previous ones, but they were classic survival-action games, similar to Resident Evil 4.

Now they are adding co-op, kinect support, cover, human enemies that shoot back, universal ammo I believe, and microtransactions. Seems like a classic case of ruining a franchise to make more money.

Haha ruining it the same way resident evil was ruined i see, i loved resident evil 4, 5 was meh, and 6 and orc were just complete jokes.

    Woah woah woah!

I loved the Dead Space 3 demo. (Anyone can get an early preview key off of the Dead Space facebook) There were certainly some spooky moments in the demo. The sound on the side of the mountain when you first load it up, you hear the wind, and then you hear other things moving, but the snowfall is so thick that you can't see anything...

Nice use of sound to create a tense atmosphere.

Sure, most of the scary bits just use jump-scares, but I think that the demo shows that, even with co-op added in, the game is a worthy successor to the Dead Space franchise. Co-op was fun, especially if you know what's coming and you let your partner run face first into the scares.

You can see my play throughs (the first 30 minutes) on Twitch.TV.

Re: Dead Space 3 early access demo (with video)

I just played through it and it definitely didn't feel that great to me.

I think the worst thing about it was the pacing, which I think is the most important thing in a survival-action game. It might just be the demo, but new enemies were being added way too fast, most without a proper introduction. Too much action without enough down-time to build up tension. The only atmospheric part was the very beginning.

The cover system and human enemies were completely pointless. I could literally stand out in the open and not get hit by a single bullet because the human enemies are so stupid. Besides that, shooting them is pointless because they'll just get killed by necromorphs in a few seconds. They pulled that trick THREE times in 30 minutes.

The part with the apparently sentient drill was kind of dumb. What the heck was even going on? I hate sequences where they just throw 500 respawning enemies at you. The controls in this game are not fast enough to possibly handle that so they make up for it by making the enemies do a pathetic amount of damage. I got hit like 50 times during that sequence and still had plenty of health. On higher difficulties that sequence will probably just be unfair and annoying like a few action-packed sequences in Dead Space 2. (The giant elevator leading up to the solar station) Of course I was going alone, this sequence was probably designed for 2 people

The crafting system seemed overly complicated but might be alright if I figure out how to use it. I'm afraid this might be a case of fixing something that wasn't broken however. I loved the upgrade system in the previous games and I see no need to change it.

The pointless kinect support and microtransactions also do not help my opinion of the game.

Re: Dead Space 3 early access demo (with video)

I threw my issues with pacing out the window, it's a demo. They're going to try to throw a little bit of everything at you in about 1 hour, so there's not a lot of time to build up the suspense.

I LOVED the weapon crafting, including the range area where you have unlimited parts and resources made it pretty fun (to me) to learn how each part works with the rest of the weapon. I am going to be spending quite a bit of time trying to make the most badass linegun and cutter in the history of Dead Space.

    I didn't notice micro-transactions, am I just totally blind?

It wasn't in the demo, read the article I linked to above.

And yes, the pacing is probably and hopefully just a part of a bad demo.
