    Amnesia: The Dark Decent (PC)

    If anyone here enjoys a good survival-horror with mild-puzzles, I'd highly recommend checking out the somewhat obscure Amnesia: The Dark Decent for PC. As far as games are concerned, it's right at the top of my freak-out list. If you give it a go, be sure to play it at night with the lights off and the sound turned up for maximum effect.

    It plays more like a deliberately designed interactive experience along the lines of a Dear Esther than it does a traditional game, and lasts roughly 6-8 hours on the first time through.

    Here's a link to the IGN review for any who may be interested:

    I've heard a lot of people say this is the scariest game they've played.

    Ooooh giddy joy, I love me some Amnesia! Glad to see a thread about it, actually.

    I've actually beaten Amnesia already, but yes I would agree to saying it was THE scariest games I've ever played... the scariest experience I've ever had, really. There were several moments when I would have to pause the game and sit for a while to catch up with myself, while my hands were often shaking on their own.

    And to GreenCandy, the game isn't free, you have to buy it, most likely through Steam. Here's a link if interested: http://store.steampowered.com/app/57300/

    Also, you may not have heard of their upcoming sequel, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, which already looks even worse n scariness) than Amnesia!

    But for me, I've been playing Frictional Games' handywork since before Amnesia. They made 3 other similar horror games called Penumbra, which take place in an abandoned Greenland research base underground, with no clues or anything. Just as good!
    I'd check em all out right now, if I were the diehard survival horror fan you seem to be.

    I was only able to find it for download on Steam. Just type "Amnesia" into the Steam search-box; it should pop right up. It was on a ridiculously cheap Christmas sale, so I'm not certain what full retail is.

    As I mentioned above, if you try it, I highly recommend doing everything you can to eliminate outside distractions and enhance the immersion. Play at night, shut the curtains, turn off lights, turn up the volume, etc. For me, its particular brand of scares was more potent than those offered by Silent Hill, Dead Space, and any countless number of others that I've played.

    Mr. Idol happened to chime in just before I posted this, and like him I also had a couple of moments where I had to step away from the keyboard to regroup before continuing, and many others spent hurling spastic, panic stricken expletives into the air.

    @Idol:

    Thanks for the Penumbra recommendation. I'd thought about trying it, but was unsure if it was something worth buying. I'm definitely looking forward to the upcoming Machine for Pigs.

    Re: Amnesia: The Dark Decent (PC)

    I bought this game well over a year ago, but I never played it as I got heavily into Trials HD and Oblivion at the same time and stopped using the PC for gaming. Funny, though, my xbox somehow got fried this past week, so perhaps it's time now to give it a whirl.

    Amnesia is scary, but nothing compared to this:

    Play THAT no lights and full volume.
