There is alot of speculation in this piece, however, there were rumours Microsoft was going to be implementing some form of anti-used games measures in its consoles down the line. Looks like those rumours extend beyond M$ alone as I was kind of expecting.
Your thoughts?
Edit: My thoughts...
Ultimately, this is all about price and platform control. Microsoft and Sony want closed platforms where they dictate all the terms, thats what they're working towards. Microsoft wants people to get used to paying more for games, if you have a look at the pricing of retail games on PSN and M$' games on demand, you can get an idea of what they have in mind
Once they have their way, all games will be long term rentals. Alot of games already are. There are already XBLA games that have been pulled. Too bad for you if you deleted a game that can no longer be downloaded and too bad if your xbox RRoDs.
Basically, I will be buying fewer games and be alot more selective as time goes on and if things get really out of hand ill quit entirely.
It's inevitable. I wont even bother reading the article. Cost to make AAA games gonna rise even more with the next generation super shiny graphics, that even more dirty business practices will be enforced.
Also- even more dumbed down gameplay, heavy focus on multiplayer, on disc DLC, and struggle for those who actually want to make good games.
Next gen If devs feel the need to take the cinematic approach as per usual, then one of em at least better get it right.
Trying to make video games into movies is ******ed, they can and have been so much more than that.
Money shouldn't even be an issue. Just raise the price of games if that's what it takes to get them to stop with the pandering to the ******s.
I'm gone again. The ranting stops, the work resumes.
I don't think for one second that it will be used in the next PS or xbox. It would be suicide. A LOT of people buy used games to try a game they aren't too sure of, then buy the sequels new if they liked it enough. I do this. Without the ability to buy those used games, I never would have bought Borderlands 2, Dead Space 2, MW2, Blops, and several others I can't think of at the moment. It may sound good on paper since game companies don't get anything from used game sales, but they would be losing lots of $$ from people not only never trying a new series, but people, like myself, that wouldn't buy any console with that BS.
What they need to do is competitively price digital and retail copies so that used isn't so inciting. New and digital copies shouldn't be $50-60 when used is around $30.
I'll just quickly reply to that: If one of the two corporations enforced this, yes it probably would be suicide, but if both does it, then nobody would have a choice, and people will always be willing to blindly buy games anyway.
There is no shortage of people willing to blindly hand over the $£$.
It's not like everyone will migrate to PC or WiiU.
If not the next generation it will be the one after that.
This is the obvious next step but i think the greedy bastards will shoot themselves in their own feet with this. I never understand how they can even get away with putting digital games up on PSN for £49.99 when a physical retail is only £34.99, its daylight robbery on those who fall for it.
I can see them trying it but then having to back pedal and think of something somewhere in the middle. The big games sell millions on day one when they are full price, so there is obviously some chance of it working on that level, the smaller companies will be the ones to suffer and the consumer is fooked if you rely on cheaper prices further down the line. Some games i would never pay full price for but a month or so down the line when they are a bit cheaper i like to snap them up then.
But are there enough morons to perpetuate such an asinine restriction? I fear there are, but i hope we don't find out.Originally Posted by apdenton1

Just because.
Yep. They sure as hell wont allow digital trade-insAnd I feel the gen after next will be all digital. If so, this kind of DRM wont matter.
Speaking of, I want to trade in trials, it's crapjk, trials is one exception, being well worth the money.
I regret getting digital copy of oblivion though.
Im not too bothered about second hand though really, I just want good games to be made, then I wouldn't have to waste my time and money and go trade it in.
DRM been forced on PC for years now anyway.
Have another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLbFwTKc-h4
I still don't get why all games are automatically £40 ($60) at launch by default. I mean just look at Halo 4 and Black Ops 2. Halo 4 took 3 years to make while Black Ops 2 took 2 years, so just looking at resources alone you'd expect Halo 4 would be more expensive than Black Ops 2, yet they're still the same price. And this is just looking at resources and ignoring quality of content. Plus these are both AAA titles. There are a lot of games out there that you can breeze through in a matter of hours; There's no way these would be worth the same. Not to mention the £40 price tag for almost any game is a rip-off anyway. What's the deal?
Actually, I think I already know the answer...
Honestly it becomes more tempting to switch to PC gaming every year, since most game on PC can be downloaded off steam for dirt cheap, relatively speaking.
Your'e playing the wrong games then. imo some are worth far more. But since you are mostly talking about this generation in that post, I agree with mot you say.Originally Posted by James24993

When there are sales, yes. But there are usually a ton of sales going on at physical retailers as well.
I know that people complain about the price of gaming, it is (and pretty much always has been) an expensive hobby. But, just for fun here, how much do you spend on a new movie bluray/dvd? In North America the average is somewhere between $19 to $25. That will get you (on average) 1.75 hours of content. A song download (between $1 and $2) gets you about 3 minutes of content.
If you pay $60 for a title (such as Oblivion) and you get 40 hours of gameplay out of it, then you are WELL ahead of the $/content curve. Games like Halo 4 and CoD: BO2 have HUGE MP components, people spend weeks of there lives (and some spend months) on the MP alone.
Those people are getting weeks, to months, of enjoyment for $60. Is that really too expensive? I agree that digital only versions of games should be cheaper than physical as you lose out on actually "owning" the game, but retailers like BestBuy or Walmart (insert name of big box store) would go insane if they were undercut by digital downloads, and it's possible that the console manufacturer could find itself in a lawsuit.
