    Ouya

The more i read about this system .... the more i want to get one -

    >>> What Ouya lacks in raw power, it makes up for with its low price and an open design that seems perfect for hackers and hobbyists. Ouya owners will be able to open the casing with a standard screwdriver to upgrade everything from the RAM to the memory chips, and even to solder additions onto the motherboard itself using “clearly documented test points,” according to a fact sheet. Basic consumers won’t be expected to regularly upgrade the internals like PC gamers, however—Uhrman said developers can be confident in developing for “one chipset that will be totally standard.”

On the software side, every console will come pre-loaded with a free SDK, letting anyone familiar with Android development become a potential Ouya developer without paying any additional fees. The operating system on the Ouya is fully rootable, as well, meaning we’re sure to see a Linux distro for the box roughly five microseconds after it’s available in the wild. <<<

Finally .... a console that doesnt run a completely closed system comes along, i would have thought peeps would jumped all over it! We all remeber what peeps done with the PS3 & linux b4 sony released a update stopping it ..... hell i even know people that blatantly refuse to buy a new PS3 and would rather part with their cash to get a 2nd hand PS3 that still has the original OS on it, just so they can install Linux.

Free to play games, no stupid recertification fees, an abilty to upgrade the hardware on ure own .... the list goes on!!

However ... i keep getting the feeling from other posts that not a lot of people are even considering buying it, even tho its prob more user friendly than any other modern console out there n will save them a ****load of cash ..... anyone want to fill me in on why they dont rate this system?

    Re: Ouya

2 Reasons I have no interest.

    1. The ability to open it up and add ram, upgrade it and sodder whatever onto it. Its the same reason I dont like PC gaming. I dont want to feel like I need to buy an upgrade for my system to get the most out of it. If I buy the PS 4 or next xbox, they will play the same games at the same quality as systems that come out 6-7 years later. No need to buy a better graphics card or more RAM or anything.

The way current consoles work puts everybody on the same page. Nobody has to spend more to get the "best" experience. And no, things like kinect and arcade sticks dont count.

    2. The lack of graphics. I use a 50 inch plasma with 1080p. The Wii looks autrocious hooked up to this TV. Its almost 2013, I dont wanna spend ANY amount of money on a system that cant compete with a system that came out in 2006.

You dont need to constantly upgrade to enjoy PC gaming. If you were to buy a PC right now you would have access to nearly every game ever made including console exclusives. PC gaming is superior for many reasons, mostly mods, but certainly not graphics since graphics hold hardly any value. Like console pad? so do I, just plug it into your USB port and for most games all you need to do is configure joystick controls, others without that functionality, there are programs like Xpadder. Like playing on big TV? So do I, just hook it up if you got the cable.

Constantly upgrading is for hardcores with money. Just treat your PC as if it were a console, buy a new one every generation, you should be able to run most games that are released for that generation (maybe), just not at optimal settings. Most new games suck anyway so upgrading just to have graphics but no gameplay wouldnt be a wise choice at all. I'd rather play earthworm Jim than Batman:AC .

Not to mention PC has a couple of exclusives that destroy everything. What I like about console is the online gaming (less hacks, no admins) but then you have to put up with BS aim assist.

You cant beat going back to your old favourites and finding new gameplay enhancing mods etc. I am a console gamer at heart though but PC ftw.

I find Ouya interesting but I wont be able to afford it. Plus I'd love to see another platform come along because more competition would hopefully lead to better games.

So is the lack of highly graphical games & the fact that you can ( if u want) upgrade/mod the systems H/W the only things that are putting people off this system??

Changing the RAM in a PC is easier than changing a tyre .. any tyre! ... u just unclick it, remove, replaced and re-click it in.

The lack of graphics i can understand, it dont really bother me but i know loads of peeps that are Graphic *****s and would rather spend the evening optimizin their systems than actually playing the game

Are there any other reasons but these?

    Re: Ouya

Its not the fact that its a pain in the *** to change RAM, its not about the cost of doing so either. Its about keeping everybody on the same page, making sure I am not missing out on something because I didnt buy extra ram or mod my system. How about developers? How are they supposed to optimise games for a system where everybody has modded theirs diferently? It sounds like a mess... When you buy an Xbox game, you know your game will play the same as it does on everybody elses xbox. I love the simplicity about that.

Its that same simplicity that is making Apple and their iPhone such a success. The Android market is scattered and open. Developers are trying to desing a game that can work on dozens of different phones, all of which vary greatly in power. Developers creating for iPhones can optimise their games much more because there are only a few different iPhones to work from. Say what you want about that company, but most Apple users say that is what they love about their iPhone.

When you say I can just buy a PC and play just about anything out there, how much money are you talking about? I recently puchased a Laptop for around 400 bucks. Well over the cost of an xbox or PS3. Obvliously I didnt purchase the thing to game on, but at nearly twice the cost of an Xbox 360, My computer wont play games that came out 5 years ago. I am not the type to build a PC system from the bottom up, piece by piece. So how much for a PC that can play all the new games on high detail? How long till that CPU needs upgrading?

Years ago, I paid about 2 grand and had the "ultimate" gaming rig made. I remember Doom3 came out around the same time that I got that PC. THe game looked amazing and ran great at high detail. A year or 2 later Crysis came out and my PC simply couldnt play that game. It would chug along at like 15 FPS with all the detail sliders all the way down. It looked like crap and made my $2000 PC seem obsolete and ****ty.

PC gaming may be the "best", but thats only for those that can afford it and dont mind fiddling with things. I still hold to the fact that you need to upgrade your PC far more often than you need to upgrade your console.

I havnt done much homework on the system, but from what I understand it is free-to-play. That bugs me, depending on how its done. I honestly just wanna pay the full price and own the game forever, no questions asked. If I download a game and play for free, but need to use real money to buy bullets or put in real money to continue after you die, I am out OUT OUT!

    Re: Ouya

Ouya has XBMC for watching all yer films, HDMI output, and it has GBA emulators. £100 for a cheap HTPC and Pokemon Emerald. On your TV. In 1080p.

Also GBC, SNES, NES, PS1, N64, NDS, Atari, Amiga, Genesis/Mega Drive, CPS2, Master System and Game Gear.

Also Theme Hospital in the form of CorsixTH, compatibility with existing Android apps, OnLive and, with a bit of effort, root, Flash support and (more than likely) CyanogenMod.

How can anyone think this won't be worth it?

...Also it's fecking tiny, comes with two controllers and, unlike iOS, doesn't ban GPL-licensed open-source apps.

I'm also interested in Valve's PC or console or whatever it's gonna be.

I have all those emulators on my psp. Those GBA, NES, SNES, and Genesis games look great on that 4 inch screen. Not so great on a 50 inch screen.
