Antti talks to EDGE - 10 Commandments of Game Design

Antti, some of you may know him as ANBA (there's still an XBL avatar prop!), sat down and told Edge what he believes to be the ten most important things to do when creating a game, these are a sample from Antti's 10 Commandments of Game Design.

    Reward the player

When a player get’s something done, and done well, give them something. It’s a digital medium, so giving stuff is easy! A medal is good. A beeping sound and a green light when you pass a checkpoint is good. An explosion, fireworks and total mayhem of music and visuals when you get a Platinum medal is good. Whatever it is – honours, storyline progression, glory – just give them rewards.

    Challenge the player

Here it is. Wits, skills, questions about the situation: let the player unwrap it by using the game mechanics that you have given him.
For the full list please head over to the EDGE article.

A very agreeable list for any genre that I would happily refer to again someday (hopefully). But would you personally apply those same principles to a AAA FPS for example, when so much is at risk?

....Yeah I think you would, silly question. Now give me more freedom with the Evo editor, I feel like i'm being treated like a baby with all the restrictions!

There isn't really much of a risk factor anyway imo. Decent marketing is what solidifies the profit margin (within reason) and satisfactory sales across the board, and then it if is an actual good game then surplus profits will come rolling in, much deserved.
But then again what many people consider to be a "good game" these days is what worries me.

If I can grow a bigger beard AND beat you at office wrestling, would you then give me full access to the Evo editor? I am 100% serious.

I'd like to hear more about these restrictions. What is it you think is missing?

when you fail in Trials it’s your fault. Not the game’s.
    I stopped reading there.

Import from 3rd party programs of all sorts, inserting text and no tiny file size limit most notably.
Perhaps more scripts with the VPL?

I don't know to be honest, but i'd like to.

Glad I saw this, not completely sure why some people seem sour about it.
