Using an external 300GB Harddrive on a xbox?

Hey i have a question here,

So i just got this 300gb external hard drive and i was like well i could use that for my xbox360 right?

Well not so, i hooked it up with the xbox and it does work but only for 31,2 GB while it has 300GB when i hook it up to a computer.
Does anyone know how to fix this or if it even is possible to fix this?

    Thanks in advance.

Well I have a 400 gig drive linked to the old xbox 360 ( big white one) and it only let's me use 16 gig for xbox use. Don't know why. If you just have music or video and link it as a usb drive it sees everything but as soon as you format it for xbox use, it only allows 16 gig or in your case 32.

Cruelty, it will allow 32 after the update. Xbox only allows up to 32g per device through external devices.

Oh. So do I need to reconfigure the drive to get 32 gig.
Will I lose stuff if I don't copy it elsewhere?

    Oh well that sucks

I did read somewhere it was possible to format my external device to FAT32 and my xbox would then see my external device as its main hard drive instead of the standard hard drive.

    Anyway thanks
