YouTube recently offered me the option of monetizing my account. This means that adds would display on my videos and I could potentially make a little money from it. Now I know adds are annoying... I always just close them right away, or skip the video adds as soon as YouTube lets me... but I'd still like the option of having a little extra income from my YouTube channel if possible.
The reason I'm bringing this up here is just for advice. The terms of agreement for monetizing my channel basically say in a bunch of different ways that I must own/have the rights to everything on my channel.
Now I'm not one of those YouTubers who uploads clips from my favorite TV shows or whatever, but I definitely don't own the rights to EVERYTHING on my channel. I have tons of video game replays in which I use my own music, and it's always me playing the game, but of course I didn't create any of the games. Then I have mountain bike and unicycle videos which are filmed and edited entirely by me, but I do typically use music by other artists in these videos.
I've been uploading to YouTube since October of 2006, and I currently have 1,271 videos on my channel... I'd hate to have my channel suspended or taken down if I monetize it because of what I mentioned above. Does anyone know if this could actually happen?
I'm guessing that the worst that could happen is that I simply won't be allowed to monetize some of my videos if YouTube figures out that I used music in them that's not my own or whatever, but I just want to make sure.
Has anyone else here monetized their channel? Any advice on the matter?
I also have the ability to monetise my videos. Basically with every video I upload (game related) I will submit it for monetisation, and 80% get through ok, the rest are just declined but they remain on Youtube and my standing is not affected.
I guess with games it doesn't matter, using clips from films and tv could be a different story though.
Yea, I figured the game videos wouldn't matter. What I'm more concerned about are my mountain bike and unicycle videos that use music I didn't write.
You mean we can make money on our trials videos???? O_o
^^
Not anyone can make money on YouTube. They have to offer you the option of monetizing your videos. I'm sure they have some algorithm to calculate who is "worthy"... probably factoring in views, subscribers, frequency of uploads, etc.
As I said, I've been using YouTube since 2006 and I have over 1,000 videos by now, but they only offered me the option a few months ago. I'm sure in my case it's mainly based on sheer quantity, but it would make sense if they offered the option to a newer YouTuber with only a handful of videos if they were getting tons of views on them.
I've been offered but I closed it because I make game videos, so I didn't think I could.
Yea exactly, and game videos are a big percentage of what I upload as well... so I wanted to make sure I couldn't get in trouble by monetizing my account.
About your concern about using other people music, can't you have in the description where it says the artist and where to buy it.
Yes you can, and I always do that. I know I can't get in trouble for simply HAVING videos like this on my channel, but MAKING MONEY from adds on a video which has a soundtrack I don't own seems like it could get me in some kind of legal trouble...Originally Posted by LukeMSki
It has nothing to do with the amount of videos you have. I have the option to monetize and only have 1 video on my channel.
