Re: Multiplayer is quite frankly a big fail

When I saw the title I was preparing the pitchforks and torches, but to be honest you raised some valid points. One thing that a;ways bugged me which was pretty trivial was the fact that you only got ONE measly point for not finishing a track, even if you are a second away from finishing.

So I can go through the entire of WoTN and be 21 seconds slower than the top player and get 1 point? If I finished in the last second I'd have gotten 5 points. Where the hell did the four points go? I can understand deducting one, maybe two for not finishing. But FOUR? When I'm literally an inch from the finish line? Sorry, but come on...

Re: Multiplayer is quite frankly a big fail

the MP on this game could've been amazing, but it's got way too many problems.

players have gotta be punished for quitting. as soon as you allow people to quit without a penalty, you get loads of people quitting. it happens in every game where people aren't punished. last week i had EVIL XBOX WERKS quit after he'd finished behind me and there were 2 seconds left on the clock while we waited for the last guy to finish, on the last Trials track. then the other guy quit out as well.

then the leaderboards thing just makes the whole thing uncompetitive. i can only xbox for 2, 3 hours max a night. i have a wife, kid and i work so that's about all i can manage. so improving my rank by much is just impossible with all these folk who have the time to play for 4-8 hours a day. in any game the best players should be at the top.
Virtua Tennis 3 had perfect rankings. it was based entirely on who you beat. i was ranked 46th and the rankings were so accurate that i couldn't beat the guys in 40th or above, but i'd destroy people just below my rank. it felt like real tennis rankings and i'd say it was the best MP experience i've had ever.
can you imagine if in real life tennis rankings the guy who played the most was no.1? you could win all the slams and the Masters tournaments but some crap player who's playing every tournament going would be top. your mate Dave who beats his nan on the local courts every day would be in the top 100.

Trials should be all about the rank, SP and MP. at the moment MP is basically meaningless.

PS i agree with everything WILLYUMZ said as well. you listed every single problem with the MP there...

I agree with most things said in this thread (as long as we are talking about public MP; private MP doesn't suffer from most of the problems listed here).

The game is supposed to give you a loss (and decreased score) if you disconnect. But for some reason this doesn't seem to be working properly (I am not a network programmer, so I don't know the specifics). But fixing just this issue wouldn't help much, as the scoring system seems to be basically based on grinding (true skill rating doesn't seem to affect enough)

its at least encouraging to hear that you agree sebbbi, i was afraid when i saw your name that you would be trying to justify these problems but its good to know thats not the case. if the worst happens and none of these issues can be fixed for evo.. at least its a solid area to make big improvements on in the next Trials game

Respect where it's due. You don't see many devs sharing gripes on their own game with the community.

Edit. I'm now wondering if MS have a standard batch of net code that's dropped into arcade games.

Sebbbi, I think the main thing most people want to know, is there anything being or planned to be done about these issues?

It all depends on what the levels are of your opponents. I've noticed that when I get into a game with 3 other people and they all have a rank higher than mine, the xp I get is ridiculous. But if I'm in a game with all lower ranked people, my progress bar hardly moves. I'm almost certain that's how people can have a terrible win/loss ratio but still have more points than someone with a perfect win/loss.

This "true skill" system is ******** and ironically has nothing to do with skill.

You need to lose points whenever you lose a match. If you lose a match against people ranked much higher than you, you will only lose a few points. If you lost a match against people ranked much lower than you, you will lose a lot of points. Quitting is obviously an automatic loss.

That way there will be something other than grinding involved.

I agree with what has been said, but I'd like to point out that what we have with Evo, in terms of MP, is a big step ahead of what we had in HD. I haven't checked my MP rank in...ever, because I don't care. If you forget all that and just play for the individual races it's a whole lot more fun. It would be even MORE fun if the matchmaking were a bit smoother, and if people weren't lame quitters. Perhaps RL will fix one of these problems. The other one will probably remain.
