i dont seem to get as much lean using the d-pad. i swear the analog stick has more "range". what i mean by that is if i lean back all the way on the analog stick and i lean back all the way on the d-pad, the d-pad might lean back about 80% of the lean that i get from the analog stick.

hope that sort of makes sense. maybe the newer controllers with that fancy dpad are better

If you wanted a serious answer from any of the top players, this is a horrible way to ask.

There is a difference in functionality, but I'm too busy playing Trials to explain it to you.

Analog sticks have a "range" to work with, depending on how far you tilt the stick. you can lean 50% if you need to, or 100%, or maybe only a tiny bit like 15%. And there is a little bit of transition time between a full backward lean and a full forward lean (time it takes to move the stick from full left to full right).

The D-Pad is either 0% lean or 100% lean, and nothing in between (assuming that the total lean amount is the same between analog and digital). So in theory, you should be able to transition leans faster with the D pad, but you can't vary how much you want to lean, it's either no lean, or full lean.

Another thing to consider would be the rider's animation compared to when weight transfer actually happens. What I mean is, if you lean 100% right and immediately go to 100% left, the rider obviously takes some time to make the animation that transitions from one position to another. That takes a little bit of time.. But does the game apply lean independently of the rider's animation (follows the controller), or does it follow the rider animation? if the physics is tied to the actual rider animation, it may slow down how fast you can actually transition from forward to back.

There is a lot of stuff going on when you think about it lol.

opoooooh ... stressy!! ... in all fairness i asked a "normal" question on my first post n it was hijacked by a load of peeps that obviously need a shag!

N Threewheels, i here what u are saying and am wondering if by using the D-pad its causing the rocking horse movement that ive moaned about b4?

When i use the d-pad there are 3 postions that u could do by tappin the D-pad, however if you hold it, yes then it is 100% one way or the other, i think the fluidity of the riders movement between these postions is the diffference between the controls

Not true. With small taps of the d-pad you are able to obtain every lean position the analog stick has.

so is it just the transition of the rider that is different? or again is it just a preference thing, it really .. according to the game controls make no difference at all!

Well, you have more range of control. D-Pad might be easier for fast hops and what not, but the A-Stick has much more control. Where as A-Stick gives you 0-100% of control with all in between numbers, but the D-Pad gives you 0 or 100.

I did test both out, though I use A-Stick. What I found is that D-Pad did feel like it shifted the rider slower, though it might just be mental because you're expecting it to be faster.. Also, I felt much less precise using D-Pad. I'd say thumbstick is better all around once you're used to it. You would be surprised how many times using 15 or 45% of the available movement with the stick helps, is faster, and even safer.

I'm sure it's largely what you prefer, but I'd put my money on the A-Stick being all around better. Though the D-Pad isn't a crippling disadvantage as people like Euan use it who are much better than me. Just try the A-Stick for a while is all I can suggest.

Ahh, didn't know that you could tap the D pad, as I've never actually used it in this game. Though typically, it's kind of like using a keyboard for movement, it's either on or off, so I wrongly assumed it behaved the same way in this game.

so if you can "tap" the d-pad to obtain various positions, I can see where that might give you some control over how much you lean, but it sounds like it would be slower in some situations as well.
