here is what i was thinking of doing
riding on top a moving train. jumping from one train to another, but what i want to know is it possible when you cross a checkpoint on the train. when you restart back to the checkpoint. Will the train be the same distance it travelled before you hit the checkpoint when you restart the checkpoint?
hopefully you understand what i mean![]()
p.s i have done this yet but im not great with the editor and it will take me hours to get to the stage i want. i want to know if it's possible before i try/waste hours getting to that stage.
you might be able to use an OPE to set the position of the train, then turn it off and let physics take over. You would have to find out where the train should be at each checkpoint and set the position of the train accordingly.
You can move the train using an OPE. Select the train (and anything on it etc) and uncheck the box "reset in checkpoint. Do this for the ope events too. Then the train will move a certain distance and wont reset at any point.
if you are moving the train using physics, you should be able to select each object and turn off reset in checkpoint restart and that will also make the train continue from where it last was instead of restarting it, but depending on where your checkpoints are, you could end up spawning inside the train and exploding instantly.
I guess our simple answer to the question he asked is yes. And it can be done in more than one way! LOL
thanks for the help guys ill give it a try![]()
One kid did this, I am pretty sure he made the environment move instead of the train, laggiest track I have ever played though.
Doing train tracks are really hard and a daunting task. I did one in THD and EVO. If you use object position event your bike will react weird while riding on the train, but it is possible and your train will be in the same place it was when you reset as long as you de-select the "reset in checkpoint" option. Doing that will give you a whole set of new problems tho. You have to make sure that you will be able to traverse each train car from any position. Riders will hit certain cars at different times, or fault and reset at different times, and since the bike acts wonky when using the OPE, it's best to minimize the distance between the cars, or use custom collision.
It's not really possible to do the train using physics if you have more than a few cars moving at one time. If you keep the physics bubble small and try to move just a few cars at a time, but have a bunch lined up in a row. The ones that are in the physics bubble will move and the glitch into the ones that are static/outside of the bubble. If you make the physics bubble bigger and try to move a bunch of trains at one time then your frame rate will drop immensly.
The way I did it in THD, was have a few moving cars at one time. The player would traverse those cars and then get onto a bridge or overpass. The first set of train cars would go under said objects and have physics disabled. Then I would trigger physics on a new set of train cars from the bridge or overpass. Do that a few times and it appears to be riding on a full train.
Here are my versions and maybe it will give you some better insight, if that didn't make much sense

I tried to keep the amount of time on the track to a minimum since the OPE makes objects react the way they do. I had my train reset from checkpoints. Suited the track better that way. I had the first set of train cars go "hidden" in the rock bridge and started a new set of trains. I had to make them turn on down the track and it was easier to control from a shorter distance.

This was one of my earlier tracks and had a god awful line, but hey I had a moving train and some other cool stuff in it.
Hope I gave you a little insight to doing a train themed track. They are a lot of work and take a lot of testing and tweaking and testing and head scratchingI think they can be really cool if executed correctly.
Good luck man! Feel free to hit me up if you have an questions, I would be glad to help in any way I can![]()

That was me, yeah trains are tough, especially with a large train, as physics aren't really an option on something that big and moving the train with an OPE causes issues with the bike riding on it, so I tried moving the background instead, i figured a little lag was better than the bike spazzing out through stuff and getting stuck in objects. As for the OPs main question, mine was only one train and so didn't matter if it reset at the checkpoint, but you should just be able to turn all the 'reset at checkpoint restart' boxes off, whichever way you make the train move.Originally Posted by Synapsis
