If you are worried about getting asked to play people tracks if you go to privacy settings you can make it so that only friends can send you messages

Also, jook13 posted in the Ninja Track Video Leaderboard thread, but I think it's more appropriate to respond here:

You're absolutely right jook... that's exactly what I'm doing. The more I think about it, the less motivated I feel to move on to Evo.

When I first started in Trials HD, I was having a blast. So much of a blast that I decided to get more involved with the community and my own niche within the game - Ninja Tracks. After becoming an active member of the community, I was still having a lot of fun, but the game took over more and more of my life. This is of course entirely my own fault. I don't get addicted to substances... but I do get addicted to video games. I know this about myself.

You've all seen me rant before about how Trials HD practically took over my life, and how I started having much more fun with the game after everyone else moved on to Evo, which allowed me to play the game at my own pace again. From May through July of this year I spent so much time enjoying other aspects of life, and only played Trials once in a while, and I felt more happy and upbeat than I've felt in years. The only reason I started playing a lot more recently is because I injured my back (a bulged disc in my lower back) and therefore I haven't been able to go hiking, disc golfing, or biking while I go to physical therapy and wait for my body to heal...

Once I'm all healed up I'm determined to get back into that lifestyle - getting outside and living my life as much as I can. I know that if I get Evo I will become completely absorbed in the game trying to platinum everything, keep up-to-date on all my favorite creators, try to take top spots on custom track leaderboards, etc. etc.

Especially now that I've become somewhat of an icon in the Trials community (no bragging intended), I know that if I move on to Evo I will CONSTANTLY have people bugging me to try their new Ninja tracks, or to try to beat their run on a specific track, etc.

During the peak of the Trials HD years, I feel like I missed out on so many other aspects of life because I was completely consumed by the game, and I know I would become just as addicted to Evo.

I know that I'll still have the urge to get my "Trials fix" once in a while, but I can easily get this from THD... just choosing a fun Level 2 or 3 track to zero once in a while. No pressure, no goals, no community. Just me playing a game I love that no one else plays anymore. That probably sounds ******ed to most of you, but it sounds like a great plan to me... at least during this stage in my life.

I know that reading this will probably disappoint a lot of you. I get SO MANY comments on my videos along the lines of "OMG WHEN R U GETTING EVO???" ... which really does nothing but prove my point. Why do you think so many people want me to hurry up and move on? Probably so they can ask me to try to 0-fault their Ninja tracks and upload replays... or play multiplayer with them...

I'm not going to miss out on any more mountain bike rides or awesome powder days in the Winter because I slept in too long after playing Trials until 4am.

    /Rant.

I think this is one reason why you may like Evo more. For me personally, The whole game is a lot more of a casual experience. In HD, I would obsess over getting my next zero fault on a tough custom track. Part of the motivation was so I could upload and show off my run. In Evo, there are already replays, there is no ninja video thread. There is no need to upload a run so there is less pressure to prove my self. My favorite part of this game is being part of the OTHG. In this group, we are given 4 tracks to run a week. I enjoy having a small goal like that, just sit back and relax as I take off .1 or .2 at a time. Like I said, its a much more casual experience for me. I still love the game, its the only game I play. But I find myself doing family fun more and gaming less than I did with HD.

Its all in the experience you create for yourself though. If you end up playing Evo, are you still gonna set incredibly high goals for yourself? Look at the first page of this thread and read it all. Who wouldnt get burnt out after completing something like that? Who wouldnt feel they missed out on other parts of their life after zeroing around 400 ninja tracks? If you dont think you can play Evo in a less intense manner, I would suggest not playing it really. You said you know you have videogame addiction issues. I know I have alcohol addiction issues, thats why I havnt drank in over 4 years. I wish I could come home from work and drink a beer or 2 to relax. Problem when I try that is I then proceed finish the 6 pack 2 hours later then find myself driving to get more...

Re: Malachyte's Trials HD Goals - No Evo 'til they're done!

Thanks to everyone for your support and suggestions. I can see now that the way I phrased things made me come across as a bit of a whiny little ***** complaining that "everyone would make me play too much"...

    Let me clarify:

I would have no problem ignoring crappy track makers asking me to play their Ninja tracks. But I would WANT to keep up-to-date on all the great track makers I've become familiar with from THD, like Murdoc, jook, Heetsauce, Skumbag, Lumberjack, NV ii Alex, InfenoTrials, BlazingDude, QcChopper, Iron Warlord, etc. etc. etc. (So many more...)

Whether I set my profile to private or not, I know I wouldn't be able to stop myself from trying to 0-fault and platinum every track made by any of these creators. I also wouldn't be able to stop myself from trying to 0-fault and platinum everything in the game, including Test Your Might...

I didn't know this was an option... but still, if I'm being honest with myself I know that this wouldn't work. I could set it up, but if I felt like I was on the verge of zeroing a particular track or whatever, I would just go turn it off and keep playing... and I'm sure this would happen a lot.

What jook said really sums it up pretty well:

I could definitely start out trying to play Evo in a less intense manner, but I know for a fact that this wouldn't last. I would just become completely absorbed. Exactly like you said with your alcohol addiction - you used to tell yourself you were just gonna have 2 beers, but before you knew it you'd finish the six-pack and go buy more. I could tell myself I was just going to zero one Ninja track or platinum a couple of non-Ninjas... but I here's an example of what I know would happen very regularly:

"Oh, just one try on the next track... damn, I was pretty close to zeroing that! Ok, just one more try... Yes! Zeroed it! Ok, let's turn off the XBox now... oh look at that, I have a new message... No way, a new QcChopper track!! Ok, I gotta try it before I quit playing for the day... just one try. Crap, that track was really fun... just one more try... one more... oh, NOW I understand the right technique for that difficult obstacle, well lemme just try to get a better run now that I'm not doing the wrong thing... OMG, 2 faults!!! I'll bet I can get zero pretty easily... just a few more tries..."

    You get the idea.

On the other hand, I can easily have a beer or two without the urge to have more. I smoke weed on a semi-regular basis... maybe 2 times a week on average, yet I've never been tempted to do it more often. In fact, I enjoy the moderation, and I don't understand people who enjoy being high for every waking moment of their life... I've tried ecstasy and mushrooms too, and even though I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences, I've never felt like doing these drugs more than once or twice a year.

I'm just not the same way with video games I love... I have so much trouble tearing myself away from them once I get sucked in.

It's been my dream since I was around 13 to live up in the mountains close to ski resorts where I could mountain bike and snowboard on a regular basis. I finally made that happen a few years ago when I moved from southern California up here to Truckee in northern California. It's expensive to live up here... why the hell am I spending the extra money to live up here if I'm going to spend 90% of my free time playing video games?

Anyway, I'm still playing THD a lot right now because of my back injury, but I know I'll be able to cut down on my time easily once my back is good enough to start doing the outdoor activities I love again, specifically because there's nothing to keep up with. My goals are completed, and there is no new user-generated content coming out at all.

Mal whatever you wanna do in the future I wish you all the best, genuinely one of my favourite people I've met through Trials. I totally agree with Jook in that the competetive/can't put it down factor is diminished greatly in Evo but can also totally appreciate your reluctance to get involved.

Just keep upping crazy *** vids to youtube so we can keep tabs on your escapades bud

Thank you Joe, what flattery! I may give in and get Evo some day... but not now. And of course, I will continue to upload all kinds of videos to YouTube... just as soon as my stupid back gets better.

    Dizzy Ninja
--41--Malachyte - 5:16.098 (Third Try) - I actually played this track a few times when it was first released. I'm pretty sure this was my third attempt, but it was a long time ago so I'm not sure.

    Felony
--56--Malachyte - 6:18.454 (Meh) - I'm pretty sure I played this track several times when it was first released. This run is so old… I use faults in several places out of impatience or frustration, on obstacles that are easy to try repeatedly without faulting… Bah! Embarrassing!

    DJ_11 v1.1
--97--Malachyte - 16:57.671 (First Try) - As with most fanbeltgattsu tracks, I wasted a lot of time/faults figuring out some of the very strange obstacles.

--48--Malachyte - 6:26.139 (First Try) - I wasted some time/faults figuring out the rotating cube obstacle. Especially considering this, my fault count was exceptionally low for a first-try run on a Level 2 track… but I think I got lucky in a few other places. In any case the track really felt like a Level 2 to me.

--41--Malachyte - 4:55.504 (Second Try) - As far as I remember, I played this track a second time because I was on the fence between a Level 1 and a Level 2. I ended up settling on Level 2 mainly because of the obstacle I got most of my faults on in this run.

    InfernoTrials

    Legend
--15--Malachyte - 2:34.676 (Meh) - I spent a while playing this track when it was first released just because I found it fun!

    Traveller
--8--Malachyte - 3:49.534 (Meh) - I spent a while trying to 0-fault this track because I originally rated it as Level 1 for some reason… after several hours this was still my best run, so I decided to re-rate the track as Level 2.

    Ninja Mining
--44--Malachyte - 5:24.840 (Second Try) - I think I played the track once when it was first released, then later I was talking with Murdoc about it, and he told me he had come really close to getting out of the rock pit below the three metal bars. This intrigued me, so I decided to try the track again to see if this was possible. Turns out it is.

--105--Malachyte - 9:10.850 (First Try) - My fault count could have been lower on this one… it seems I got either frustrated or impatient on the third obstacle and started using faults when I could have easily recovered from most of my failed attempts…

    Murdoc Loch

    False Pretenses
--67--Malachyte - 8:26.395 (Meh) - I played this track a handful of times back in the day because Murdoc asked me to try to 0-fault it. If I recall correctly, he was also asking me to reanalyze it and potentially rate it as a Level 1. Even after around 5 tries or so, this was still my best run. Granted, I was much worse back then than I am now, and this track also focuses on speed-runner techniques which have always been my weakest point… but I think even today I'd still rate it as a light Level 2. Also, for some reason I used several faults on the 2nd-to-last obstacle even though I could have easily recovered.

    Mountain Ninja
--117--Malachyte - 9:31.991 (First Try) - I don't think it occurred to me at the time that it was possible to recover on the 2nd-to-last obstacle. Or maybe I was just impatient. Who knows.

    NV ii Alex

    666 + Ninja = ?
--170--Malachyte - 13:45.335 (First Try) - This is another very old and embarrassing run… I used lots of faults on the 2nd-to-last obstacle where I could have easily recovered, and just played very poorly overall… Man, I used to suck at this game.

    Perdition
--28--Malachyte - 3:12.610 (Third Try) - I'm fairly certain this was my third try. As far as I recall, I was really on the fence between Level 1 and Level 2 for this track, so I played it a few extra times. In the end I decided that although most of the track was very borderline, the last obstacle was hard enough to push the track to a light Level 2 overall.

I never timed out, but this track has a couple of different routes… some of them end up at dead ends with checkpoints… so there is nothing you can do but restart. You can see one of these dead ends underneath the last obstacle - If I had dropped down and gotten that checkpoint I'd have been screwed… Most of the obstacles I encountered on this passing run were actually brand new to me, because I had never stayed on the top route for so long.

    C = 3.14 x D
--18--Malachyte - 3:02.038 (Meh) - I think I spent a while playing this track way back when it was first released. In the replay it seems like I've had a fair bit of practice on it, but I can tell that my skills are fairly outdated… that's why I think it's an old run.

    Constant Motion
--36--Malachyte - 2:10.574 (First Try) - This track is very short - only 2 obstacles, so it's theoretically pretty easy to 0-fault. However the first one is at least Level 3 - maybe even an easy Level 4, and the second is somewhere near the border of Level 2 and Level 3. I guess overall that makes the track a Level 2…? I dunno…
