List of things not to do in Evo tracks to make them better

Following on from the topic about a great many of the new user tracks being somewhat lacking shall we say, it might be helpful for trackmakers and Evo players to list those things to avoid to make a track more playable and enjoyable for all.

This is not to just to pour criticism on any tracks or trackmakers since everyone has to start somewhere and not every trackmaker will be able to create RedLynx quality tracks even after a great deal of practice.

I'll start with one thing I've seen about a good few new tracks which I find to be a pain and diminishes the quality of the track.

    - Show the player where they are going.

You've proabably all played at least one track like this by now.
There's the start line and then you're off to who knows where as the track line snakes of and twists and turns with no clue as to where it's going.
Some kind of indication of the path you are on is not only aesthetically pleasing but it makes a track FAIR.
Not knowing where you are going is a bit of a cheat and like bad camera angles and almost complete darkness it makes a track harder but not in a fair way.

That's just one to get started I'm sure there are many more things that other players and trackmakers can list as things to avoid at all costs in a track.

Use smoke effects wisely. Theres nothing worse than not being able to see the track!! Inferno 3 anyone!

    Curved Drivelines:

TEST THEM THOROUGHLY!! Take your time making a curved line, don't use many curve points, use ONE and adjust the curve with the RT and LT. Smooth curves are what you want, fast turns look bad. The less spline points the better. If you are making a complete circle, then you should only use 4 spline points.

Put some time and effort in to creating and testing. Make it worth playing basically. Don't throw some crap together and put it up on TC.

Scenery. A lot of the maps i play have nothing going on outside of the actual course itself. Don't use a big empty lot unless you are going to place background objects to make the course look less bland.

If you spent less than ten days working on your track then you are releasing it too soon. (I.E. there should be no custom tracks up yet)

don't give a track a cool name that makes one think it is going to be quite the adventure, and then you play it only to find out that it is just one difficult obstacle after another. boring!

And as for the people playing these said tracks, don't be so damn critical. we are all learning here. we are not game designers. just try every track and have fun with it. you can always delete the ones you do not like.

and if i just contradicted myself, don't bother mentioning it because i do not care

False, some people can create great customs in a day, easily.

Supercross Tracks: When you test your Supercross map you use the single player camera, make sure you test it with the multiplayer player camera it might not look at all like you planned in MP.

I agree with al the above, especially the over-use of curving !!!

    A few of mine include:

Don't use rain - it cripples the framerate (and causes awful screen tearing) - or at least only in maps with a low poly-count

If you use Fog... reduce Alpha channel to get thinner varieties !!! Better than being invisible

Don't make camera angles too difficult ! Highly zoomed, and Worms-eye view look great, but need to be used wisely!

TIP: Place lots of Checkpoints everywhere when designing - this makes it quick and easy to test out small sections without having to restart ! (Just remember to get rid before publishing !)

OH, that reminds me - after a hard section, put a checkpoint there, or people will get bored and give up !

Agreed ! A short 20 second second track can look gorgeous and be fun, yet take very little time - especially if you create a template and simply modify them !
